  • Omit degrees, titles, and honors that follow a personal name, such as M.D.
    • James A. Reed, M.D., F.R.C.S.   becomes   Reed JA
    • Katherine Schmidt, Ph.D.   becomes   Schmidt K
    • Robert V. Lang, Major, US Army   becomes   Lang RV
  • Omit rank and honors that precede a name, such as Colonel or Sir
    • Sir Frances Hildebrand   becomes   Hildebrand F
    • Dr. Kristine Eberhard   becomes   Eberhard K
    • Captain R. C. Williams   becomes   Williams RC
