How should South Africans feel about the state of the judiciary after this week? How does the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) work and why is it there? Is the trust in the judiciary being eroded by the "non-handling" of the Judge John Hlophe issue? And where did it all go wrong?
These were some of the topics discussed during the third instalment of the Editors' Table, where News24 subscribers got exclusive insights into the Western Cape Judge President's fate.
The JSC Judicial Conduct Tribunal found that Hlophe was guilty of impeachable conduct for trying to sway two Constitutional Court justices to rule in favour of then-ANC president Jacob Zuma in 2008. Now, the JSC must endorse the tribunal's report and find him guilty of impeachable conduct before recommending his impeachment to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

But after 13 turbulent years, there seems to be no haste to deal with this matter.
News24 editor-in-chief Adriaan Basson and legal reporters Karyn Maughan and Jeanette Chabalala talked about these and other burning issues in an hour-long discussion on Thursday evening.
Freedom Under Law chairperson Johann Kriegler, who has urged the JSC to push for Hlophe's impeachment, also joined the trio. Basson asked Kriegler to share his reaction to what he heard at the JSC this week and explain why Hlophe seems untouchable.
