Covid-19: 2073 new cases and 46 more deaths

South Africa recorded 2 073 new Covid-19 infections by Wednesday and 46 more Covid-19-related deaths, taking the death toll to 54 557.

In a statement, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said the country had recorded a total of 1 588 221 Covid-19 cases by Wednesday.

Four of the 46 deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape, one in the Free State, 19 in Gauteng, 18 in Limpopo, two in KwaZulu-Natal and two in the Northern Cape.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize added.

To date, 353 181 healthcare workers have been vaccinated as part of the Sisonke protocol.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most active cases with 5 412, followed by the Northern Cape's 3 974 and the Free State's 3 760.

The recovery rate is 95%, with 1 510 385 recoveries recorded.

To date, 10 773 227 tests have been completed.
