We end on a sad note on the issue of GBV but we have raised a level of awareness, says Ramaphosa.

He calls on Parliament to hasten the process of finalising the three Bills.

Speak as loudly as we possibly can against those who commit GBV, says Ramaphosa.

We should get rid of the system of patriarchy so that men should know that they don't own the women of South Africa, they must treat them with respect, says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

Ramaphosa says the figures he mentioned were given by SAPS.

"I must admit, there has not been good focus" and now the minister (of police) and commissioner are much more aware that it is important work that needs to be done, says Ramaphosa speaking on GBV issues.

We need to continue with our efforts to eliminate GBV is South Africa, it doesn't make us look good, says Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa says he admires a port in Singapore. He spent "some time" there understanding how the port works, as he did in China.

Ramaphosa says the port in Togo is being handled "extremely well" and is still in government ownership.

"That is not going to happen," Ramaphosa tells Steenhuisen for saying the port in Cape Town should be handed over to the DA.

06 May 2021

We want Durban Port to regain is glory and positioning, says Ramaphosa.

It will play a critical role and for that reason we want to unlock its capability.

One cannot emphasis more its importance, says Ramaphosa.

He talks about the importance of other ports in South Africa that not many countries can boast about.

"We are a country that is well endowed with good ports," says Ramaphosa.

A great future awaits, he says.

06 May 2021

The Durban Port lost its status and descended to number 3, says Ramaphosa.

The new management team of Transnet is "working very hard" to turnaround the port's delivery.

An ambitious plan has been put forward to enhance performance at the port.

The port will be positioned as a hub for the region and continent, says Ramaphosa.

There is a lot of improvements at the port, says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

We continue to work with other countries, says Ramaphosa including the issue of standby force.

Private security firms have been employed by various countries, says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

Government keeps a close watch on the activities of insurgents and would-be insurgents, in the country and outside of it, says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

Soldiers have been deployed on the eastern part of Congo to secure against insurgents.

We never want to act on our volition, says Ramaphosa.

We work with others to silence the guns on our continent.

We have not yet succeeded in this but much more work needs to be done.

South Africa will always be ready to fulfil our continental or regional obligations says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

Ramaphosa says as the SADC family, including the AU, want to attract investors to southern Africa.

It is of "great concern" that companies like Total withdraw.

The idea of a standby force has always been present.

We seek to secure the lives of our people in the SADC, but at the same time ensure that there is economic growth, says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

The conflict in Mozambique threatens the stability of the broader region, says Ramaphosa.

The chairperson of the AU has condemned the attacks in Mozambique.

A summit scheduled for 29 April was postponed and a new date is yet to be announced.

The SADC is resolved in finding a lasting solution, says Ramaphosa.

Mozambique has been supported in a number of efforts from a number of countries and "we have been giving them moral support," says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

Ramaphosa says the coronavirus council is looking closely at what the variant in India is about and how to respond to it.

"We are in the process of examining" the banning of flights from India.

It helps that there are no direct flights between India and South Africa, says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

The variant in India is "most worrying" says Ramaphosa.

We are not only watching, we are taking steps in getting prepared, says Ramaphosa.

The coronavirus council will meet when they have all the information.

SA will be sending assistance to India in ventilators and PPE, says Ramaphosa.

We are not sleeping on the job, hiding our heads in the sand, says Ramaphosa.

06 May 2021

Ramaphosa responds to Malema and says approval for use of vaccines lies with Sahpra (South African Health Products Regulatory Authority) and he cannot speak for them.

Ramaphosa: "We do not play games with the lives of our people. From the onset of this pandemic, all that we've been focused on is how best we can save the lives of our people."

Ramaphosa: "Some of us don't sleep much, Honourable Malema, because we are continuously concerned, worried, and agonising about the lives of South Africans, and how best we can secure the lives of the people of South Africa."

Ramaphosa: "It is a task, and indeed a burden, that you may take lightly, but some of us take it very seriously, and we will not play games with the lives of South Africans."

06 May 2021

EFF leader Julius Malema, in his supplementary question on vaccine rollout, asks Ramaphosa why he is "hellbent" on only using Pfizer and J&J Covid-19 vaccines, and not considering other vaccines like Russia's Sputnik V and China's Sinopharm vaccines.

Malema insinuates that Ramaphosa is a shrewd businessman and asks if he perhaps has any financial reasons for choosing those vaccines over the others.

An MP rises on a point of order and says that Malema cannot cast aspersions on the president that way.

Malema (who is addressing National Assembly virtually, with his camera off) is upset by the interruption, but eventually calms down and proceeds to finish his question about "emergency" use of Sputnik V and Sinopharm.

06 May 2021

Ramaphosa: The first goal of our Covid-19 vaccination programme is to rapidly reduce the number of people who get very sick or die from Covid-19, the second goal is to achieve population immunity.

Ramaphosa: To achieve the first goal of preventing hospitalisation and death as rapidly as possible, the Covid-19 vaccination programme will target those who are greatest at risk. Age is the single greatest factor.

Ramaphosa: Primary healthcare clinics, pharmacies, public and private hospitals and mobile vaccination teams are being set up at conference centres and workplaces. All vaccination sites must be accredited. So far, 3 337 vaccination sites are registered.

06 May 2021

Ramaphosa: We want the Covid-19 vaccines to be manufactured in South Africa. That's why we worked with India for the TRIPS waiver. The USA's announcement that it will support this is a big victory. It shows our voice and messages have weight.

Ramaphosa: A TRIPS waiver will benefit people across Africa and people in developing economies. Such a waiver should facilitate effective transfer of intellectual property, technology and know-how on mutually beneficial terms, to ensure timely, equitable and affordable access to Covid vaccines.

Ramaphosa: We've lost time on the Covid-19 vaccine rollout, we know that. Of course we care, that's what we've been doing since this pandemic started. We've been in the trenches and we've been doing the task of protecting and defending our people.

06 May 2021

Ramaphosa, in response to a heated supplementary question from Steenhuisen, starts off by saying, "I'm just wondering what Mr Steenhuisen ate at lunch, because it does seem like he's a very angry young man, and I just don't know what he ate".

Ramaphosa says the ANC's "factional battles" have nothing to do with Steenhuisen or the DA.

Ramaphosa: "When you were involved in your own battles in the Democratic Alliance, you never heard a single one of us say anything. We did not comment, because it's not our space - what happens in the Democratic Alliance is your business. And what is happening in the ANC, is also not your business. It is ANC business."
