WATCH | Capetonians donate food, water to firefighters on the frontline

  • The Newlands firebase for the Volunteer Wildfire Services received a number of donations.
  • The firebase was stacked with food, water, energy drinks and an assortment of other necessities.
  • Firefighters have been tirelessly battling a blaze, which started near Rhodes Memorial on Sunday. 

Capetonians are banding together to show their support for the firefighters battling the fire raging on the mountain.

On Monday, locals donated beverages and food to the frontline workers.

"This is highly appreciated, and anyone who still wants to donate may drop off donations at the Newlands firebase, off the M3 highway," the manager at Table Mountain National Park, Frans van Rooyen, said in a statement.

He said community members have been coming in their numbers to drop off food, water, energy drinks and an assortment of other necessities.

Megan Smith, a Newlands resident, got her neighbours to make sandwiches for the firefighters.

"We are so grateful for the fire department. We know that fire is a very real threat to our everyday life, and we just thought this was a way that we could help the volunteer firefighters," Smith said. 

The operations manager at the Newlands firebase, Peter Wynne, said the donations were coming in "thick and fast".

"When the guys get off the line and see this, they will be happy to see their work is being supported."
