Three security guards were injured after a cash-in-transit van was bombed in Dobsonville, south of Johannesburg, on Monday.
Suspects ambushed the vehicle as it travelled towards Elias Motsoaledi Road. During the ambush, the assailants fired several rounds.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Brenda Muridili told News24 the guards were forced from the vehicle by the suspects.
The perpetrators then used explosives to gain access to back of the van - where the money was stored.
"The suspects fled in a Blue BMW X5 and a Silver Audi with an undisclosed amount of money," said Muridili.
Subsequently, the guards received medical attention.
"The two getaway vehicles were later recovered at Phiri Street, Old Dobsonville," she said.
No arrests have been made.
Police are looking for any information that could lead to the suspects' arrest.
