At the 2016 Rio Games, our local heroes brought home 10 Olympic medals, which tied for the most medals won at an Olympic tournament by Team South Africa.
Making his Olympic debut, Wayde van Niekerk tore through the 400m field to smash Michael Johnson's 17-year world record by 0.15 seconds, winning in a time of 43.03.
It was a goosebump moment as he became the first* sprinter to take Olympic gold for South Africa for almost a century as the then 24-year-old Van Niekerk became a world superstar and South Africa's new golden boy.
