To earn the MS in Economics, a student must complete a total of 45 credits with a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
A maximum of three credits taken at another university may be granted toward the credit requirement for the master's degree. Twenty-seven credits must be completed at The New School for Social Research.
Elective Courses
Of the elective courses, three must be selected from courses offered or cross-listed by the Department of Economics; the others may be courses offered by other departments of The New School for Social Research or by the Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment. The student's faculty advisor must approve the elective program.
Graduate Minors
Students can use elective courses toward completing one of the university’s graduate minors. These structured pathways of study immerse master's and doctoral students in disciplines outside their primary field and expose them to alternative modes of research and practice. Completed graduate minors are officially recorded on students' transcripts.
The Master of Science Examination
The MS in Economics requires that a student pass the MS Examination, offered twice a year. With the approval of the Department of Economics, a qualifying paper may be accepted in place of the MS examination.
