Becoming a Subscriber

How do I subscribe or give a gift subscription?

Please visit our subscription Web site to find the best option for your needs.


When will my first issue arrive?

You will receive your first issue between three and six weeks after purchasing a print subscription. Each issue is published one week prior to the cover date, and most subscribers receive it a few days after publication. For subscribers outside the United States, each issue may arrive up to two weeks after the cover date.

Check on which issue was mailed to you most recently or report a delivery problem.


What does my subscription include?

All subscriptions provide unlimited digital access to The New Yorker’s offerings, including newyorker.com, the online archive, and the New Yorker app. Print subscribers also receive the print edition of the magazine, published weekly (except for select combined issues throughout the year).


My subscription included a tote bag. When can I expect it to arrive?

The tote ships six to eight weeks after your payment is processed. International orders may take longer to ship, and packages may be delayed at customs. We regret that our staff cannot track tote bags after they enter the postal system.

The New Yorker also offers tote bags with limited-time or seasonal designs. The design of the bag depends on the offer you purchase, and will be displayed on the order form when you subscribe. At this time, tote bags cannot be purchased independently from a subscription, and the design cannot vary from the one available with your offer.


What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and Diners Club cards. We also accept PayPal, Apple Pay, and Amazon Pay. Alternatively, checks can be mailed to The New Yorker, P.O. Box 37684, Boone, IA 50037-0684.


Can I get a receipt or confirmation of my subscription, account details, or cancellation?

Yes, our staff would be happy to send you a receipt. After subscribing, you can expect to receive a confirmation e-mail within twenty-four hours. For all other requests, please e-mail help@newyorker.com or call 800-444-7570 (515-243-3273, if outside the United States).


When will I be charged?

Credit cards are charged as soon as your order is received. It may take up to three days for the charge to appear on your credit-card statement. Before the start of each renewal, you will be e-mailed a reminder notice summarizing the details of your subscription and the rate that you will be charged.


Why do I need to provide a mailing address for a digital subscription?

Should your e-mail address ever become defunct, we will send notifications about your subscription to your postal address instead.


Can I subscribe to The New Yorker if I live outside the United States?

Yes. You can subscribe to The New Yorker from most countries, although it may take longer to receive print issues in the mail. For assistance, e-mail help@newyorker.com or call 515-243-3273.

I forgot my password. How can I recover it?

On newyorker.com, select Sign In at the top-right corner of your screen, then Forgot password?. If there is a New Yorker account associated with your e-mail address, we will send you instructions for resetting your password.


How do I make changes to my e-mail address or password?

Please visit My Account to manage your newyorker.com account information, including your e-mail address and password.


What does it mean to link or verify my subscription? Why is this important?

Creating a newyorker.com account and subscribing to the magazine are independent operations. It is possible to create a newyorker.com account without being a subscriber, and vice versa. In order to read unlimited articles as a subscriber on newyorker.com, you’ll need to link your subscription to your newyorker.com account.

To link your subscription:

  1. Sign in to your newyorker.com account (or create one, if you haven’t yet).
  2. Visit newyorker.com/account/link.
  3. Enter your account number or subscription number, which can be found in two places: the Account summary section of Customer Care and the mailing label of a magazine, if you are a print subscriber.
  4. Or, select the link to use your shipping address.

How do I unsubscribe from The New Yorker?

You can cancel your subscription (or a gift subscription) via My Account by selecting Manage Subscription.

If I cancel my subscription, when does the cancellation go into effect?

The cancellation will be processed immediately, though you may receive one to two additional issues after ending your subscription.

How do I check on when my subscription expires?

You can view the expiration date of your subscription (or gift subscription) via Manage Account on your account profile page.


How do I temporarily suspend my subscription?

You can stop your subscription (or gift subscription) for up to one year, and then resume it, via Customer Care by selecting Manage Subscription, then Suspend Subscription.


If I suspend my print subscription, will I still have access to newyorker.com, the archive, and New Yorker mobile apps?

While your subscription is suspended, you will have limited access to newyorker.com. Just like a reader who has not subscribed, you will be able to view the newyorker.com home page, section pages, video hub, Goings On About Town listings, and a limited number of articles per month across the Web site. The archive and the New Yorker app are available to active subscribers only.

In the NYer Print Edition app, you will continue to have access to any issues that were released while you were a subscriber.

Why should I create a newyorker.com account?

All readers are encouraged to create a free account on newyorker.com, regardless of their subscription status. Signing in enables you to save your place while solving the crossword, submit ideas to the Cartoon Caption Contest in one step, save stories for later, and more.

If you subscribe to The New Yorker, you also have unlimited access to articles on newyorker.com, as well as the New Yorker app and the complete New Yorker archive online. However, you won’t be able to access any of the above without a newyorker.com account.

If you have not done so, please create a free account now.


Are all New Yorker articles available on newyorker.com?

Every article since 2007, whether it was published in the magazine or only on the Web, is available on newyorker.com. Every issue of the magazine dating back to its founding, in 1925, is available to subscribers at archives.newyorker.com.


Do I need a subscription to access newyorker.com?

If you are not a subscriber, you have limited access to The New Yorker’s Web site.

You can view newyorker.com’s home page, section pages, video hub, Goings On About Town listings, and a limited number of articles per month across the Web site. The New Yorker app and archive are available to subscribers only.

Subscribers enjoy unlimited access to newyorker.com.


Is the magazine available on mobile and tablet devices?

Yes. The New Yorker app allows you to view all of The New Yorker’s offerings on a mobile or tablet device, including daily news and culture coverage from the Web, and each week’s issue, in full.

If you subscribed directly through The New Yorker (including newyorker.com and the New Yorker app), you can read the complete magazine by opening the New Yorker app, then selecting Magazine at the bottom of the screen. Every issue since 2008 is available to browse and save off-line.

The New Yorker app is available through the App Store and Google Play Store. Digital editions of the magazine are available through the Nook bookstore.


Which devices support the New Yorker app?

The New Yorker app can be downloaded to your iPhone or iPad from the App Store or your Android phone or tablet from the Google Play Store.


Do I need a New Yorker subscription to access the New Yorker app?

Yes. The app is exclusive to subscribers, and is free to download. If you subscribed directly through The New Yorker (including newyorker.com and the New Yorker app), you can view as many articles and issues as you’d like. If eligible, non-subscribers will be invited to explore the app through a free trial.


Can I share stories from the New Yorker app through e-mail or social media?

Yes. While the app is available for subscribers only, each individual story is shareable. The link will direct viewers to the story on our Web site.


I have an active digital subscription. How do I get unlimited access to the New Yorker app?

  • Open the New Yorker app and tap Settings in the top-right corner.
  • If you already have a newyorker.com account, select Already a subscriber? Sign in.
  • If, after signing in, you see the option to Link your print subscription, please do so.
  • If you do not have a newyorker.com account, select Link your print subscription, enter your subscription details, and create an account.

You will then be able to use your newyorker.com account to get unlimited access to both of our apps, newyorker.com, and the online archive.


How do I get unlimited access to the magazine on my phone or tablet?

If you already have an active New Yorker subscription, purchased directly from The New Yorker, download the New Yorker app from the App Store or Google Play Store and sign in.

If you are a subscriber but do not have a newyorker.com account, please create one and link your subscription.

If you do not have an active New Yorker subscription, please subscribe to get unlimited access to the magazine.


I subscribed through the New Yorker app or the NYer Print Edition app on my iPhone, iPad, or iPod. How do I get unlimited access to newyorker.com, the apps, and the archive?

Immediately after you subscribed through the app, you were prompted to create a newyorker.com account. If you have not done so, you can now.

If you subscribed through the New Yorker app:

  • Open the app and select Settings in the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Select Already a subscriber? Sign in.
  • If you do not see Sign in or create an account, select Restore your Apple purchase.

If you subscribed through the NYer Print Edition app:

  • Visit the My Account tab in the NYer Print Edition app.
  • Select Get newyorker.com access and sign up.
  • If you have an account, select Already have a log-in at newyorker.com? to sign in.

You will then be able to use your newyorker.com account to get unlimited access to both of our apps, newyorker.com, and the archive.


I purchased a subscription to The New Yorker through the New Yorker app. How can I cancel it?

If you subscribed through the New Yorker app on an iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to cancel through Apple. If you subscribed through the app on an Android phone or tablet, you’ll need to cancel through Google Play.


Why am I no longer receiving new print issues through Amazon?

As of March, 2023, print issues of The New Yorker are no longer available for purchase through Amazon. For questions about this change, please call Amazon at 888-280-4331 or visit its Digital Services and Device Support page.

How can I access newyorker.com articles published on Flipboard?

Flipboard provides a continuous feed of stories and cartoons from newyorker.com. To enjoy unlimited access to The New Yorker on Flipboard:

  • Open the Flipboard app.
  • Select the Menu.
  • Select Following, then Accounts.
  • Scroll down and select The New Yorker.
  • If you already have a newyorker.com account associated with an active subscription, sign in.

Where can I find The New Yorker Crossword?

In print, a crossword can be found at the back of every issue of the magazine. On the Web site, our full slate of puzzles can be accessed at newyorker.com/crossword-puzzles-and-games. In the New Yorker app, puzzles can be found in the Top Stories feed, in the Magazine tab, or by searching “Crossword.” If you like to solve on your phone, we recommend using the app for the best experience.


How frequently are new puzzles published?

Crosswords are published on the Web site five times per week, Monday through Friday at 6 ᴀ.ᴍ. Eastern time. Full-sized puzzles are published Monday through Wednesday; mini puzzles are published Thursdays and Fridays. The Thursday Mini is slightly larger (and trickier) than the Friday Mini, but both are smaller than the full-sized crosswords.


How hard is the crossword?

Our Monday puzzle is the most challenging. The crossword decreases in difficulty throughout the week, with our smallest and breeziest puzzles published on Fridays.


How can I tell whether an online puzzle will appear in print?

A print-issue date is listed for puzzles that have or will run in print:

Puzzles that are Web-only don’t list an issue date.


Who constructs The New Yorker’s puzzles?

Our puzzles and games are created by a small rotation of constructors. The New Yorker does not currently accept unsolicited puzzle submissions.


How do I enter an answer for a crossword on the Web site?

Select a clue from the list or square in the grid. Once an entire word is added, its clue will appear in gray, regardless of whether the answer is correct.


Can I use keyboard shortcuts to navigate through a crossword on a computer?

Yes. Keyboard shortcuts include:

  • Using arrow keys to move the cursor
  • Pressing Enter or Tab to skip to the next clue
  • Holding Shift and pressing Enter or Tab to go back to the previous clue
  • Pressing the space bar to switch between Across and Down clues

How can I navigate through a crossword on my smartphone?

Once you have entered a word, the cursor will automatically move to the next word in the current direction. To switch directions, tap on the blue clue bar or double-tap on the grid.


How can I print a crossword?

From a computer, select the word Print in the upper-right corner of the page, above the grid. (The browser’s default printing option will not work, unfortunately.) You can then choose whether to print an empty grid, the grid including any letters filled in so far, or the solution. You can also adjust the font size of the clues and save ink by printing lighter black squares.


How can I get help with a clue? I’m stumped.

If you're solving a crossword digitally, select Reveal in the upper-right corner of the page, above the grid. You may choose to reveal the current square, the current word, or the entire solution.


How can I check my answers as I solve a crossword?

If you're solving a crossword digitally, select Settings in the top-right corner of the page, then flip the Error check mode toggle to On.

In Error check mode, clues that have been solved correctly appear in green, and incorrectly solved clues (as well as their corresponding answers in the grid) appear in red.


How can I check if a single letter or word is correct?

If you're solving a crossword digitally, select Check in the top-right corner of the page. From there, you can choose whether to check the current square, the current word, or the entire grid. Incorrect letters will appear in red.


Can I save a partially solved crossword for later?

Yes. In order to save your progress online, please sign in to your New Yorker account.

  • From a computer, open newyorker.com and select Sign in from the top-right corner of the screen.
  • From a browser on your phone, open newyorker.com, select the Menu icon in the top-left corner, then Sign in.

If you do not have a New Yorker account, you can create one free of charge on any of the above sign-in pages.


When I type in a word, the cursor skips over squares that have already been filled. Is it possible to stop this?

Yes. Select Settings from the top-right corner of the page, then uncheck the box next to Skip over filled letters.


Is it possible to pause the crossword timer?

Yes. Simply click or tap on the timer to pause it.


Is it possible to hide the crossword timer? It’s taunting me.

Yes. Select Settings from the top-right corner of the page, then flip the toggle for Show timer to Off.


I’ve made a mess of things. Can I reset the entire crossword?

Yes. Select the Menu icon in the top-left corner of the page, then Clear from the drop-down menu. The grid will be cleared, and the timer will reset to zero.


Help! I can’t see any clues.

You may need to expand your browser window or adjust the zoom percentage.


Can I play older crosswords?

You sure can. All of The New Yorker’s crossword puzzles are available at newyorker.com/puzzles-and-games-dept/crossword.


What about cryptic crosswords?

Cryptic crosswords function like the New Yorker Crossword Puzzle: you can print them, check your answers, and perform all the actions listed above.

Can I solve a crossword with another person?

You can co-solve the New Yorker Crossword Puzzle online by selecting Partner Mode (if you are on a computer) or the person icon (if you are on your phone).


How many partners can I add?

You are welcome to invite one partner per crossword. Only two people can co-solve a crossword at a time.


How do I know if my partner has accepted the invitation?

Once you have extended an invitation, the options above the grid will change accordingly.

To invite a partner, select Partner Mode on a computer, or tap this icon on a smartphone.

When your partner has accepted the invitation and is actively solving the puzzle, you’ll see Co-solving or Partner active on a computer, or this icon on a smartphone.

If your partner hasn’t interacted with the puzzle in more than five minutes, or is not connected to the Internet, you’ll see Partner inactive or Partner off-line on a computer, or this icon on a smartphone.

If you are not connected to the Internet, you’ll see Off-line on a computer, or this icon on a smartphone.


I received a notification that I am already solving this puzzle. What’s going on?

You have already invited a partner, or you may already have the same puzzle open in another browser window.


I need to take a break. How can I return to my shared puzzle later?

Be sure to keep the puzzle open or save the link. If you've been solving in the New Yorker app, you can also tap the Partner Mode icon again to return to your shared puzzle.


Does co-solving affect my score?

No, solving a crossword with a partner does not add additional time or otherwise penalize you.


What is The New Yorker’s Name Drop, and how does it work?

Name Drop is a trivia game that tests your knowledge of fascinating people. The goal is to determine the identity of a notable person based on a series of six clues.

The clues are challenging at first and get easier as you go. The fewer clues you need in order to guess correctly, the higher your score will be: if you can guess the person after just one clue, you’ll get six points; after two clues, you’ll get five; and so on. You have only a hundred seconds to guess, so keep an eye on the timer.


Where can I play Name Drop?

You can access our bank of more than five hundred quizzes, and play quizzes at random, by visiting newyorker.com/namedrop, or by tapping the Name Drop icon in the Top Stories feed of the New Yorker app. You can also play themed packs of quizzes at the Puzzles & Games Dept. hub.


What if I’m unsure about how to spell someone’s name?

Answers with minor spelling mistakes may be accepted, but try to be as precise as you can. For people who have multiple names, go with the most well-known option. Either the full name or just the last name is acceptable.


Is it cheating if I ask somebody else for an answer?

We are social creatures; it is not cheating to ask for help from someone who is in the room with you. But e-mailing someone or going to Google is totally cheating.

What is the online archive?

The archive stores digital replicas of every print issue of The New Yorker published since 1925. Subscribers can explore the archive at archives.newyorker.com.


How do I search the archive?

Once you’ve selected the magnifying glass from the top-right menu, you can choose whether to search the issue you’re currently viewing or the entire archive. The search uses Optical Character Recognition to scan every word in the issue or archive, including advertisements.


How can I share articles from the archive?

Articles cannot be shared directly from the archive. Instead, please share the equivalent page on newyorker.com after searching for the article of interest on the Web site.

All stories since 2007 are available on newyorker.com in their full form, along with many selected pieces published before 2007.


Can I print articles from the archive?

Yes. Select the Print icon in the top-right toolbar, then choose which pages you’d like to print. A printer icon will appear over each page you’ve selected to be printed. Once you’ve finished selecting pages, select the paper size and then click the blue Print button at the top of the page.


Can I buy single issues from the archive?

We no longer sell single digital issues through the archive. Subscribers can access every issue as part of their subscription, and nonsubscribers can purchase single issues through the NYer Print Edition app.


Where can I find back issues of the magazine?

Subscribers can access every issue published since 1925 at archives.newyorker.com. The archive stores digital replicas of every print edition, without the digital bonus material available through our apps or on newyorker.com.


Can I view back issues of The New Yorker online?

If the back issue was published after the app launched for your device, it should be available.

  • iPad issues are available beginning October 4, 2010.
  • Nook Color Tablet issues are available beginning December 12, 2011.
  • iPhone issues are available beginning August 13 & 20, 2012.
  • Google News may have back issues from April 22, 2013 through December 2019 available.

Subscribers can also visit archives.newyorker.com for digital access to every issue published since 1925.


Are printed back issues available?

Select individual issues dating back to 1925 are available, through our Back Issues Department, for $10.50 each. For orders outside the United States (including Canada), the price per issue is $11.45. These prices include shipping and handling.

How can I find or purchase prints of covers or cartoons?

New Yorker covers and cartoons are available for purchase in the Condé Nast Store. To find a specific cartoon, search by keyword, title, or artist.


What is the Cartoon Caption Contest, and what are the rules?

Each week, we provide a cartoon in need of a caption. You, the reader, submit a caption, we choose three finalists, and you vote for your favorite.

Anyone can enter or vote in the Cartoon Caption Contest, whether or not you are a subscriber. You will just need to sign in or create a free newyorker.com account, if you have not done so before.

Anyone age thirteen or over can enter, except employees, agents, or representatives of the sponsor or any other party associated with the development or administration of the contest, or any member of their immediate family. See the complete rules.


What is the New Yorker Festival?

Held every fall in New York City, the New Yorker Festival is an annual celebration that brings the breadth and spirit of the magazine to life. In the course of a weekend, The New Yorker’s staff sits down with the world’s leading writers, artists, filmmakers, actors, comedians, politicians, activists, and athletes. The festival also features live performances, film previews, and excursions throughout the city.

I am a current subscriber. How can I access articles behind the paywall on newyorker.com?

All subscribers have unlimited access to newyorker.com and our mobile apps, once they are signed in. Please remember to sign in on all of your devices—smartphones, tablets, and computers—in order to access the magazine seamlessly everywhere.

If you do not have a newyorker.com account, please create one. If we cannot verify that you have an active subscription based on your e-mail address, you may need to enter your subscription account number or mailing address.


I’m signed in, but am still seeing the paywall. What should I do?

If you continue to hit the paywall after signing in, there are two likely explanations. Your subscription may have expired, or your account may not be linked to your subscription.

You can confirm your subscription status via Manage Account on your account profile page.

To link your subscription, please visit newyorker.com/account/link. If you have trouble linking the two, we recommend signing in to Customer Care to confirm that your account number and mailing address are listed correctly.

Why doesn’t newyorker.com keep me signed in?

When you sign in on newyorker.com, be sure to check the box that reads “Keep me signed in.” As long as you have cookies enabled, the Web site will remember your account on that browser.

Please keep in mind that social-media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages use their own browsers with sign-in requirements that are beyond The New Yorker’s control. (For example, if you browse Twitter on your phone, and click on a New Yorker link, the article will open in Twitter’s in-app browser.) Each of these browsers has varying abilities to remember sign-in information (or “cookies”), which may result in your having to sign in again.

Similarly, if you click on a New Yorker link through an e-mail or newsletter, and the article opens in a new browser window, you may need to sign in again. Once you have done so, you won’t have to sign in again in that window.

I am trying to subscribe, but the system says I already have an account. How do I fix this?

I tried to create an account but am seeing an error message that says my subscription is already associated with one. What can I do?

If your subscription is already associated with an account, please sign in to that account. If you have trouble recalling which e-mail address is associated with your subscription, please contact us at 800-444-7570 (or 515-243-3273, if outside the United States), or e-mail help@newyorker.com.


I’m trying to link my print subscription, but keep getting rejected. What can I do?

Please make sure that the address you entered is the exact address associated with your subscription. If you have a Canadian address, make sure to enter your postal code without any spaces.

If you purchased a digital-only subscription through an app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, you will need to link your subscription using the same app. If you have any trouble, please contact us at 800-444-7570 (or 515-243-3273, if outside the United States), or e-mail help@newyorker.com.


What should I do if my New Yorker iPhone or iPad app crashes?

Try closing any other apps that are running in the background of your device. If problems persist:

  • Force-quit the app, then reopen it.
  • Turn your device off, then back on.
  • Delete and reinstall the app.

I unsubscribed from an e-mail or newsletter but am still receiving it. What can I do?

You can manage your e-mail preferences online at any time. Visit newyorker.com and select My Account in the top-right corner. Then, scroll down to the newsletter section and uncheck the box of any newsletter you would no longer like to receive. It may take up to forty-eight hours for your request to be processed.

If you have already unsubscribed and are still receiving unwelcome e-mail, please contact us at privacy_administration@condenast.com.


Why won’t the pages of the archive turn?

You may not be signed in, which is often due to your browser’s cookies. Try opening your browser’s preferences (or settings) and deleting all of the cookies related to archives.newyorker.com. You’ll then want to quit the browser, reopen it, and sign in again. Refreshing the page may also solve the problem.
