The average property tax bill in New Jersey was $8,767 last year. But there can be big swings from town to town and county to county.
So far we’ve shown you the towns in New Jersey with the highest and lowest property taxes and towns with the highest and lowest property tax rates. We’ve also provided a handy tool for you to look up some useful comparisons for your own town.
Now here’s a look at where people are paying the most in every county.
The list shows that all but four of New Jersey’s 21 counties have towns where the average bill tops $10,000. And all but three counties have towns where the average bill was more than the state average.
Remember, these are average property tax bills, so they take into account property values as wells as tax rates. Towns with more expensive real estate tend to have more expensive tax bills.

Atlantic County
The average property tax bill in Longport Borough was $10,872 in 2018, the highest in Atlantic County.

The average property tax bill in Alpine Borough was $21,299 in 2018, the highest in Bergen County.

The average property tax bill in Haddonfield Borough was $15,182 in 2018, the highest* in Camden County.

*The average property tax bill in Tavistock, which was formed in 1921 so members of the Tavistock Country Club could play golf on Sundays, was $31,736 last year. Although, technically, it is listed as a municipality, with just three homes and fewer than a dozen residents who live near the golf course, it is in a unique category.

The average property tax bill in Stone Harbor Borough was $8,615 in 2018, the highest in Cape May County.
