Report

Occupied Country, Displaced People

NRC|Published 15. Feb 2014
This paper provides an overview of the oft-forgotten colony of Western Sahara and the struggle of its original people, the Sahrawis, who have spent the last forty years broken up into refugee camps.

Western Sahara is clearly neglected within the international community due to the long-lasting duration of the Sahrawi’s displacement by their Moroccan occupiers. This publication is a call to action for the international community to rally behind the Sahrawis, as the UN Security Council and General Assembly have already expressed support for Western Saharan self-determination.

This thematic report is an updated version of the Norwegian Refugee Council’s (NRC) publication ‘Occupied Country, Displaced People’ (2008).
