Colleges of Many Colors

Below are the more racially and ethnically diverse of the nation's larger four-year institutions (at least 2,000 degree-seeking undergraduates in fall 2005). Since 67 percent of the American population is white, the list includes nonprofit colleges and universities reporting an equal or lower proportion of white students and no other race in the majority. (Some students decline to identify race; at the colleges below, the percentage of non-white students would exceed 33 percent even if all the unknowns were white.) But race is just one indicator of a heterogeneous experience. The new mantra in the multicultural movement is economic diversity. The list also includes the percentage of students receiving federal Pell grants, which are given to low-income students. DATA
