Music is an essential part of any road trip—nearly as essential as the car, the gear, and a good destination, if you ask us. But during Oprah and Gayle's famed cross-country trek in 2006, music became a point of, uh, tension for the friends.

So this summer when Oprah and Gayle headed on another road trip 15 years later—one they called a "joy ride"—the music selection was bound to play a large role. There was just one small problem: Oprah and Gayle have a road trip rule that whoever is driving controls the music, and Oprah is not the biggest fan of Gayle's song selections.

The good news is that during their 2021 road trip, Oprah didn't complain about Gayle's picks. Perhaps it's because they weren't in the car for quite as long as last time, or maybe it's just that Gayle put together quite an excellent playlist this time around. So in case you're planning your own getaway any time soon, Gayle shared a few of her favorite songs to play on the road.
