The first children's literary award in the world. The Newbery Medal Award was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. The Newbery Medal is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The medal is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The award is announced in January and has been given annually since 1922.
