The Simple Dollar Weekly Roundup: Bookshelf Edition

Published on October 21, 2009 at http://www.livingcheaply.net

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t have much of a desire to collect books. I keep a small pile of reference books around for information and inspiration, and I have a handful of books I’m sure I’ll re-read in the future. Other than that, the only books I retain are unread books. I have a bookshelf in my office and, aside from part of the top shelf, the only books on it are unread books – ones I’ve never read. I pick them up at yard sales, from PaperBackSwap , and so forth and just pop them on there.

This week on BTT

Published on October 16, 2009 at http://jennysbooks.wordpress.com

We’re moving in a couple weeks (the first time since I was 9 years old), and I’ve been going through my library of 3000+ books, choosing the books that I could bear to part with and NOT have to pack to move. Which made me wonder… When’s the last time you weeded out your library? Do you regularly keep it pared down to your reading essentials? Or does it blossom into something out of control the minute you turn your back, like a garden after a Spring rain? Or do you simply not get rid of books?

I have found that some of the best and more practical ones might just be in a Woman’s Day or Parents magazine and not necessarily Forbes or Money Magazine . In the November issue of Woman’s Day, an article lists the top 21 websites to save you money and time. We’re all looking for advice on saving money and finding bargains. And magazines for women seem to be on top of things. Shop Local: Wow.

Save a Little Money with PaperBack Swap

Published on October 06, 2009 at http://www.beatingbroke.com

One of the sure fire ways to save money that is touted here and everywhere is to cancel your expensive cable service.  Whether you cancel the whole thing or just pare down to the smallest package for network stations, you’re left with a fair chunk of time to do something else.  Again, another suggestion to take up that time is to read a book.  I completely agree.  Depending on the book, it can be entertaining or educational or both.

As it stands right now, Paperbackswap.com and it’s DVD/CD sister sites are still my favorites. Looking at a few others, I’m really looking for a spot to trade some books that aren’t in pristine condition (like they expect at paperbackswap), that use the credit system, and that are reputable.

The cost of complaining

I’ve been exchanging my old books for new books using PaperbackSwap . I’m reading a book from the ‘ 40 modern non-fiction books everyone should read ‘ list by Marc and Angel Hack Life  ( practical tips for productive living blog).     Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. If you're looking for some huge discounts on some great electronics (and a few other things as well) Woot.com is currently in the middle of a Woot Off.  Woot.com is a great place to pick up new and refurbished items for a very cheap price, and you never know what kind of deal you're going to get!  Seriously they can sell some weird stuff sometimes.  I've even seen them sell motorhome accessories and weird stuff like that! I definitely keep an eye out during the Woot Offs because I've picked up everything from mp3 players to hard drives for next to nothing!  If you still want to know more about Woot you can check out their faq .

Addition by Subtraction: The Benefits of a “Fall Cleaning”

Published on September 17, 2009 at http://www.thesimpledollar.com

One of my favorite activities during a year is spring cleaning. After a long winter of being stuck inside and intimate with our possessions, the arrival of warm spring weather makes me throw open the windows to let the breeze blow through and just start tossing accumulated junk. I usually wind up with enough stuff for a yard sale, along with boxes of items to give to Goodwill and to mail out via PaperBackSwap and other such online trading services. When I’m done, the house usually looks empty – much more spartan than it once did.

Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 1 / Power & Responsibility : 3 of 5

Although my comic book tastes seem to lean to the DC side, I still love Marvel characters, too. I've been wanting to take a look at the Ultimate Marvel series, where classic heroes are "updated" into today's world, and finding this seven issue collection of the rebooted Spider-Man on PaperBack Swap was the perfect opportunity! The original Spider-Man origin story that everyone knows was only a single issue, so it's nice to see this re-telling spread out with much more detail.

Get Free Books From PaperBackSwap.com

I recently learned about the site PaperBackSwap.com that allows you to swap books with others via mail. They have a nice system with some checks and balances that facilitate trust and honesty between traders. The site works on a credit system. When you sign up, if you immediately list 10 books you’re willing to trade, they give you 2 credits. Each credit allows you to receive one book. Audio books can also be traded and require 2 credits to receive. Every time you send a book you get a credit.

Last week, before I left for vacation someone offered a “big box of children’s books” on Freecycle . I couldn’t resist. Especially, when the description revealed the box mainly contained toddler books. The box was full of great books. He loves the Three Stre-e-etchy Frogs & Ten Little Ladybugs books. Each book goes for $10.95! There were also a lot of Weekly Reader books inside which are excellent hardback reads. I grew up reading Weekly Reader.

PaperBack Swap

What started out as pretty much a disaster, has really shaped up to be about the best thing that’s happened around here lately. Whilst we were clearing out the basement to make way for Jim’s new photography studio, we were left with a couple odd stacks of paperback books. No charity wants them, but it seems so wasteful to just toss them in the recycling bin (and who am I to insult another writer like that anyway?). But then I found paperbackswap.com .

I'll be the first to admit that many of these require an investment of time, but I suspect that many of us have more time than money.  A couple even require some cash outlay, but you get your money back.  Find the ways that work for you. Ask your friends and family. Need a clock radio?  A replacement for your broken cellphone?  A baby stroller?  Before you hit ebay or the thrift stores, ask around.  There's a good chance somebody you know has what you need taking up space in their junk drawer or garage, and they would love to give it to you.

Members post books they want to swap and can peruse through all genres of books (hardcover, paperback, or audio) to see what is available from other members. Well my lack of posting for the last couple of days has been due to a busy spell that fell on me.  I’m happy it came because I got a lot done.  I started cleaning bookshelves off and got a bunch of books posted to pbs ( paperbackswap.com ).  I’m thrilled that I finally got this done as I have been looking at this shelf spewing literature all over the place and dreading going through everything.  But it wasn’t as bad as I thought and have had eight books requested in the last two days.  Yay!  So many credits that I can get books with!

Okay . . . so a search on the ‘net for a childhood favorite book brought me to a forum convo about said book over at PaperBack Swap . Sadly, the person no longer had the book, but I was introduced to a pretty nifty idea. How many of us (see my hand waving in the air?) have stacks of paperbacks we’ve read and then set aside? I see your piles of books - yes, I do! Well, friends . . . this is a great way to pass those beloved books on to new homes - at no cost other than postage.

Even though we’re moving to a bigger house soon, there will actually be LESS room for my books.

Free Books Thanks to PaperBack Swap

Published on July 23, 2009 at http://www.growingupgabel.com

Over the past five or six years I slowly diminished my "library", mostly due to moving across the country and lack of space. I mostly sell books on Amazon because I don't pay any fees if the book does not sell. But Amazon offers a bulk discount and special prices for large sellers of books which sometimes makes it hard to compete and actually make money on the book. Thus I have few miscellaneous books that have been hanging around in boxes. A few months ago I signed up for PaperBack Swap, but was really confused on how I earned "credits".

I love finding graphic novels on PaperBack Swap , since I know I'll enjoy just about any DC Comics edition I can find, and it feels like I'm getting them for free! This particular book isn't quite as slick as other comic collections (the pages are basic newsprint rather than glossy paper), but it's still a nice long set of seven stories that I found pretty interesting. The first story features the entire Justice League facing yet another alien invasion, but the rest of the chapters all focus on the origin tale of each hero.
