Dear Members,

August means...doldrums...dog days...everyone lying low in the heat...nothing much happening...

NOT.

We are happy to spice up your August by announcing Gold Key Membership, our brand-new package of features here at PaperBackSwap!  For a mere $12.99 a year you can access:

  • Directed Delivery  - When you request a book and multiple copies are available, the system will determine the most expedient way to get the book to you.  We take into account several factors to get your book to you as quickly as possible, putting special emphasis on the closest geographical location for “Greener swapping”!

  • Expanded Wish List - Can't fit all the books you're wishing for onto your Wish List? The basic member Wish List can hold 200 items. As a Gold Key member you can add 100 MORE items to your Wish List, up to a total of 300 items!

  • Friends Direct - What are friends for, if not to share books with? Gold Key Members can easily search all their PaperBackSwap Friends' Bookshelves to find books to request, and if you post a Wish List book that is on a Friend’s active Wish List, you will be shown a list of your friends who are currently wishing for the book, and you will be able to offer it directly to any of them (or to none of them, and offer it to the club in general)!

  • Multi-Copy Requesting - If you’ve ever wanted to order more than one copy of a particular book for your book club, classroom or reading group, this feature is for you!  As a Gold Key Member you can choose exactly the number of copies you need from the available books, and order them all simultaneously. No more ordering only one at a time!

In addition, Gold Key members enjoy one Courtesy Kiosk Transaction Fee per month (each fee = 50 cents, so that's up to $6.00 annual savings), and a nifty Gold Key badge on your member profile, identifying you as a Gold Key Member.

We hope you find this premium bundle of features useful.  We'd love to know what you think!

Happy August,

The PaperBackSwap Team

My Very Own Book.  Thanks to all of those who donated credits to our Books for Schools campaign last autumn - part of those donations went to get 6000 new books for children, via My Very Own Book, a worthy nonprofit organization that runs reading incentive programs in elementary schools in low-income neighborhoods in North Texas.  PaperBackSwap was given an award as a Gold Supporter at MVOB's Second Annual Dinner, and some members of the Dallas-Fort Worth area PBS Local Chapter attended and sent this lovely photo below.  We plan to run another Books for Schools donation program before the end of this year, so stay tuned!

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - I got a request for a book I don't have.  It's not a book I remember reading, and when I look at my account Bookshelf it isn't there in the list.  How did this happen? Is there a PBS poltergeist?  - Spooked in Saratoga

Dear Sara,

Don't worry!  The system isn't haunted.  The book was on your account Bookshelf when it was requested - it's not there now because it has been requested.  An active request takes the book from your account Bookshelf to your My Account page, and shows it in the request there.  If you have already clicked "I cannot mail" on the request, that removed the book from your account completely - so it won't be on your Bookshelf after you decline the request for it.

Members who have reported a "surprise" request to us in the past have found out that the book was either posted a while ago and then given away and not removed from the account Bookshelf list, or a spouse posted the book to the account Bookshelf, or it was a book given to the member who then posted it but did not read it (that's why it seemed unfamiliar).  Sometimes the problem is that the book is being stored in a different place from the usual "PBS books" location in the house.

If you look at the pending request on your My Account page, you will see the date and time it was posted to your Bookshelf.  You can then go to your account Bookshelf and sort the list by Date >> Ascending, and see if there are other books in the list that were posted on the same date.  That will sometimes help find the book's location in the house - it's with the other books that were posted that day.

If you can't find the book you should click "I cannot mail" on the request.  This will remove the book from your account and will pass the requestor's request along to another member who has the book.  If you do happen to find the book in your house later, you can repost it if you want to offer it again for swapping.

This is a good opportunity, to look over your account Bookshelf and remove any items in the list that you no longer have. If we all keep our account Bookshelves up-to-date, it makes swapping move more quickly for everyone, and prevents the creepy sensation of poltergeists messing with your account Bookshelf.  Definitely a win-win.

The Last Word:

  • Newsletter image As always, don't forget to start your Amazon shopping from the link at the top of the PBS site - when you do this, a small percentage of your purchase amount comes to us.  So whenever (and whatever) you plan to purchase on Amazon, start from the Amazon link at the top of the PBS site. It's an easy, free way to support the club!
  • The  Summer Blog Contest  is still open..  it's not too late to submit your photos of PaperBackSwap Gear taken on your summer roamings.  Snap a photo of yourself with a PaperBackSwap hat, t-shirt, magnet, cup, totebag, etc - and then submit it to blog@paperbackswap.com by August 31, 2011. Be sure to tell us where in the world you are in the photo!  We'll select the 5 best photos of the bunch and the Grand Prize winner will win 10 Book Credits plus $5.00 PBS money - and the glory, of course!   Four runners-up will also each win 5 Book Credits.  Visit the Kiosk and see all the great PBS gear available to order!
