My Very Own Book. Thanks to all of those who donated credits to our Books for Schools campaign last autumn - part of those donations went to get 6000 new books for children, via My Very Own Book, a worthy nonprofit organization that runs reading incentive programs in elementary schools in low-income neighborhoods in North Texas. PaperBackSwap was given an award as a Gold Supporter at MVOB's Second Annual Dinner, and some members of the Dallas-Fort Worth area PBS Local Chapter attended and sent this lovely photo below. We plan to run another Books for Schools donation program before the end of this year, so stay tuned!

DEAR LIBRARIAN
Dear Librarian - I got a request for a book I don't have. It's not a book I remember reading, and when I look at my account Bookshelf it isn't there in the list. How did this happen? Is there a PBS poltergeist? - Spooked in Saratoga
Dear Sara,
Don't worry! The system isn't haunted. The book was on your account Bookshelf when it was requested - it's not there now because it has been requested. An active request takes the book from your account Bookshelf to your My Account page, and shows it in the request there. If you have already clicked "I cannot mail" on the request, that removed the book from your account completely - so it won't be on your Bookshelf after you decline the request for it.
Members who have reported a "surprise" request to us in the past have found out that the book was either posted a while ago and then given away and not removed from the account Bookshelf list, or a spouse posted the book to the account Bookshelf, or it was a book given to the member who then posted it but did not read it (that's why it seemed unfamiliar). Sometimes the problem is that the book is being stored in a different place from the usual "PBS books" location in the house.
If you look at the pending request on your My Account page, you will see the date and time it was posted to your Bookshelf. You can then go to your account Bookshelf and sort the list by Date >> Ascending, and see if there are other books in the list that were posted on the same date. That will sometimes help find the book's location in the house - it's with the other books that were posted that day.
If you can't find the book you should click "I cannot mail" on the request. This will remove the book from your account and will pass the requestor's request along to another member who has the book. If you do happen to find the book in your house later, you can repost it if you want to offer it again for swapping.
This is a good opportunity, to look over your account Bookshelf and remove any items in the list that you no longer have. If we all keep our account Bookshelves up-to-date, it makes swapping move more quickly for everyone, and prevents the creepy sensation of poltergeists messing with your account Bookshelf. Definitely a win-win.
