Dear Members,

It's that wonderful time of the year, when families are gathering and memories are being made.  We love this season! We wanted to give our members a present - something totally new, a fun feature to celebrate the holiday - one that includes the surprise factor of gifting, with a "chosen just for you" flair.

And so...we introduce Member Appreciation Books (MABs)!  This is the perfect combination of the PBS Market (where we offer NEW books at steep discount) and our book swapping club (where you swap used books for Book Credits) - now you can get NEW books for 1 Book Credit + the cost of shipping!

MABs are unpredictable - you may be offered a MAB at any time; the system will do this randomly (as long as you have chosen favorite genres in your Account Settings or from your homepage). So you may not be offered a MAB for weeks, or you may be offered MABs every day for a while.  MAB offers will appear in the Message of the Day box (the rotating display) at the top of your Homepage  - click Home when logged in to see if you have a MAB.  If you do, you can order that book for 1 Book Credit + shipping! You can sometimes order more than one MAB at a time (click the "More Free Books" link on the MAB offer on your homepage to see the list of MABs currently available to you), or you may be allowed only one that day. To keep things fair, you can't order multiple copies of any specific MAB.  MABs can be fleeting - they can expire quickly (usually because of supplier limitations) so if you see a MAB you want, put it into your Cart.  Don't wait too long to check out though, because if the MAB expires for that book, the 1 credit + shipping price will no longer apply. MABs are specific - they are chosen for you based on your favorite genres (so you do need to select these to participate in the MAB program).  You can choose your favorite genres in two places: (1) on your Homepage and (2) in your Account Settings .

How much does a MAB cost?  For each MAB, you pay 1 Book Credit + shipping. The shipping cost is the same as always for Market books - $3.45 for the first book in a shipment, and $0.99 for each additional book in the shipment.

The MAB program launches December 11, 2012.  You can read more about MABs in the Help Center.

Don't forget to go to your Homepage to check it out, and see what MABs may be waiting there for you!

Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah to all,

Richard and
The PaperBackSwap Team

NICOLE H. (tinyavenger)

Nicole is a blessing to the club, according to the nominations we got.  She does an amazing job of coordinating the Holiday Card Swap, and members are full of praise about how much fun and kindness she adds to their PBS experience.  Not only has Nicole sent out almost 600 great books in official swaps alone, but she also swaps merrily in Games, and she's a Gold Key Member. Her Holiday Card Swap has meant so much to a lot of people.  As one member put it, "I especially enjoy receiving Christmas cards from my PBS friends because we don't have many living relatives left anymore to send cards to.  Sending out and receiving Christmas cards from PBS friends has made my Christmas much more festive and enjoyable because of Nicole H."

She's brought the spirit of Christmas all year-round to the PaperBackSwap family, and she has touched more lives than she knows.  (Now we have to get her to confess what she "did on 11/5/12 that most would think [her] crazy for!!")

Nicole, you've been VERY good this year - you are a PBS Christmas Angel! You are Member of the Month for December.  Congratulations!

If you have any nominations for Member of the Month, submit them to us hereYour nomination will not "expire"--anyone you nominate will have a chance at getting Member of the Month if enough nominations accumulate over time. Each month the person who has the most votes accumulated when the Newsletter goes to press gets to be Member of the Month and gets a newsletter mention and a nifty MoM icon to wear on profile and forum posts with pride.  So go for it! Tell us who's helped you in the Forums, who's been a great swapper, who in your opinion is a credit to PBS.  We are keeping a list of all the nominated members.  Who knows--one of them might be YOU!

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - I have been a member for three years, but I don't have a MAB offer on my homepage!  Doesn't PBS appreciate me? - Forlorn in Fairfax

Dear Lorna,

Of course we appreciate you!  MABs are quixotic, though, so you never know when they'll pop up!  If you don't have a MAB, you should be sure (1) that you are logged in and looking at the top of the Homepage and (2) you have chosen favorite genres for your account - the system doesn't know what to offer you unless you have done that.  You can choose your favorite genres in two places:

  • on your Homepage (below the Message of the Day box):    http:/www.paperbackswap.com/home.php
  • in your Account Settings:   http://www.paperbackswap.com/members/profile/account_settings.php#fav_genres
Once you've done that, just keep checking back on the Message of the Day box at the top of your Homepage to see if your luck is in!

Dear Librarian - I put a MAB in my Cart and then came back the next day to check out but the book was not "on special" anymore - the regular price was listed in the Cart.  Why did you bait-and-switch on me?  - Disappointed in Delaware

Dear Wary,

We're sorry that this happened!  It's not a bait-and-switch, we promise.  MABs can be fleeting, so it's important to buy them as soon as you can.  If they expire the cost will go back to the usual Market cost for that book.  They can also sell out quickly, so it's important to snag your MAB if you don't want to miss it!  We hope this particular book comes around again for you soon, and in the meantime keep an eye on the homepage for other MABs that might pop up!

Dear Librarian - I chose my favorite genres, and I was offered a MAB I really liked, but when I clicked "More Free Books" the page had some books on it I would never want. I thought MABs were chosen for me specifically.  Why am I seeing books I am not interested in, on that page? - Confused in Caribou

Dear Connie,

The MAB on your Homepage is specific to your selected favorite genres, but the "More Free Books" page will show you all the current MABs being offered - that includes genres that you might not be interested in.  That's why you are seeing books outside your favorite genres on that page.  We know that a lot of our members don't have just three favorite genres, and that they might be wanting to buy books for other people, so the "More Free Books" page shows you all of the books that are currently available for 1 credit + shipping.

Dear Librarian - I am so excited to have been offered a MAB - I put the one on my Homepage into my Cart and I also browsed the Market and found some great books I want there.  Can I order them all together?  What will the shipping be?  - Calculating in Chillicothe

Dear Chilly - We're glad you found books you want to order!  Yes, MABs and non-MABs from the Market will be shipped together as always - Overstock books will come in one shipment, and Super Sellers in another.  The shipping will be calculated per shipment, so each non MAB you add to a MAB shipment from one source will add only 99 cents more to the shipping!  So you can order an Overstock MAB and add 4 Overstock nonMABs to the order, and the shipping will be $3.45 (for the first book) + 4 x $0.99 (for the other four in the shipment).  You can tell what you are ordering (Overstock or Super Seller) from the screen while adding books to the shipment - books that are shown in green on the page indicate that those books are coming from the same source as a book already in your Cart.  The shipments will also be delineated in your Cart when you go there, before checking out.

 The Last Word:

  • Newsletter image As always, don't forget to start your Amazon shopping from the link at the top of the PBS site - when you do this, a small percentage of your purchase amount comes to us.  So whenever (and whatever) you plan to purchase on Amazon, start from the Amazon link at the top of the PBS site. It's an easy, free way to support the club!
  • The PBS Tour Guides have started planning for the next Cruise for PBS Members! Watch this space for details about the cruise slated for 2014.

  • The next Books for Schools Campaign is coming soon -- several schools affected by Hurricane Sandy are included in the roster. We'll send out an email when the donation drive launches...stay tuned!
