 Great news for teachers and students!  We'll be launching School Book Sales soon, our new site to allow teachers to obtain classroom books at the lowest possible cost. Because of our relationship with vendors (established by new-book purchases for the PaperBackSwap Market) we are able to take advantage of bulk discount book purchases. We hope that this will help to get more books into the hands of young readers. Mailing on the Fly -  Now you can mark books mailed from your mobile device!  PBS Mobile is a stripped-down version of the site that you can access from your phone or tablet. Want to volunteer for PaperBackSwap?  We are currently seeking members who would like to be Tour Guides. Tour Guides are experienced and friendly members who assist other members in using the site. To be eligible, you must have been a member at least 3 months and have a Public Profile (that is set to be publicly viewable). Beware the Malware.  We've gotten some complaints from members that "surveys" have popped up when they are on the PaperBackSwap site.  We have nothing to do with those!  They're the work of malware (=unwelcome software installed on your hard drive).  You can get "infected" with malware many ways - for example, by clicking a fake "See who unfriended you!" link on facebook. If you have malware on your computer, you should disinfect your hard drive; to prevent getting malware, you should (1) keep your browser updated - updates often include security measures and (2) be careful where you click!  Remember that PaperBackSwap does not show popup surveys or ads; if you are unsure of anything you see on our site or in a PaperBackSwap email, you can contact us to check it out.

Danny N. (Alameda)

Danny is one of the pillars of PaperBackSwap. He has been swapping since 2007, and he has been at the top of the Top 100 Swappers list most of that time!  (He was recently "deposed" by Winston C, and Danny handled that very graciously.)  The record of official swaps that Danny has conducted only scratches the surface, really - Danny is one of our Book Bazaar-ites and makes a lot of "deals" for extra books in his swaps.  So many books have been re-homed because of Danny, and so many readers have been thrilled by the arrival of that next great read in a package from Danny.  He adopted 2 schools in our Adopt a School program, and has generously given credits to Friends of PaperBackSwap.  He does not miss any opportunity to support the club, and he does it all cheerfully and humbly, without fanfare. 

Danny, you are a book-swapping club all on your own!  We salute your enormous industry and your obvious passion for books, and we thank you for all you have contributed to PaperBackSwap.  You are Member of the Month for May.  Congratulations!

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - I got a request for a book and the request had this Requestor Condition on it - "No books from a smoking home, and no musty-smelling books."  Well, we don't smoke in my home, but I got this book from a used bookstore  - so who knows if it's ever been in a smoking home?  It doesn't smell like smoke to me, and it doesn't smell musty either, but I have a suspicion that my sense of smell isn't too good -- people sometimes comment about smells (perfume or cooking odors) that I don't even notice.  So maybe the book reeks and I don't know it!  What should I do?  Should I send the book? What if she says it smells like smoke or that it's musty? What if I click "Does not meet conditions" on the request?  Would I be lying?  Would I get in trouble with the club if I decline the request? I want to share my book (it was so good!), but I don't know if it does meet her conditions. Should I have someone else smell the book for me? And I can't see any way to contact the requestor about this!  Why are you torturing me?  ARGHHHHH!  - Anne in Arlington

Dear Antsy,

Don't worry! You won't get in trouble if you click "Book Does Not Meet Conditions" - even if it does meet the conditions.  Senders are not penalized for declining requests with special conditions (RCs), for any reason.  We think that keeps things fair - members can specify extra stipulations, but other members don't have to accept those requests.  That way the club is "big enough" for both groups: those who use RCs, and those who don't want to bother with them.  Some members want to use RCs and that's fine! But other members don't want to devote the extra energy to figuring out if their books meet specific members' extra criteria, and that's fine too.

You are right - there isn't a way for senders to communicate with requestors without accepting the request.  We designed things that way purposely, so that RCs do not result in protracted discussions about every swap.  We wanted to make RCs available to those who need that feature, but we didn't want RCs to complicate the swapping process.  So the requestor needs to make her extra conditions clear, and you have to decide if your book meets those criteria without additional information from the requestor.

You are also right when you say that sense of smell can really vary between individuals, and that you don't know the specifics of the households in which your used book has been before it came to you. If as you say you suspect that your own sense of smell might not be less acute than average, you are wise to consider that it may not be as acute as the other member's.  If she is specifying that she does not want smelly books, she probably has a good sense of smell.  If you think you might not be the best judge of a book's smokiness or mustiness, you can either simply decline the request.  You could have someone else smell the book for you, but that still does not guarantee that your "tester" has as keen a sense of smell as the requestor. 

Members who really have issues with smoky or musty books will not mind if you decline their requests - in fact, they should be grateful for your conscientiousness, and your reluctance to send them a book that will not be welcomed by them.  It's probably best to decide on a policy for conditions that involve smell, and apply it to all requests that ask you to stipulate to the absence of odor.  That way you don't have to agonize like this every time!  So, for example, if a request says "Please no books that are currently in a smoking home" you can accept that request (since your home is nonsmoking), but if it asks "Please no smoky or smelly books" you should decline, to be sure you don't send a book that is not welcomed by the other member. 

Dear Librarian -  I wanted to share a helpful tip with the club.  Recently I sent a book out and the outer paper wrapping tore open and got separated from the book. But the book still got delivered!  That's because when I wrap my books I use a layer of clear plastic wrap to protect them against weather.  I got into the habit of tucking page 2 of the wrapper (the page that has the receiver's name and address on it) under the plastic wrap, so it is next to the book and held there by (and easily readable through) the wrap. That way if a book gets loose from the packaging (those USPS machines can be hungry!), it still has the address on it and can still get to its destination. - Susan in PA

Excellent suggestion!  Remember that if you don't use plastic wrap (or if the requestor asks that you not use it) you can always tuck page 2 between the pages of the book,or just inside the front cover.  This has gotten "naked" books delivered in the past.  USPS does a superb job, but machines can mangle even the best-wrapped package.  Thanks for the tip!  Keep in mind that you can share helpful hints like this in our Discussion Forums (accessible under Community at the top of any page on the site); many members will see your post, and you may save more than one book from being lost!
