Dear Members,

Many of you may not have realized it, but PaperBackSwap quietly turned 11 on September 1st. We've come a long way since 2004! The first PaperBackSwap was a basic site with minimal features and a very small membership (mostly family and friends). We strongly believed in the idea of bookswapping and the principles of read-swap-save...and soon it was clear that others did too! Word of mouth carried across the country, spreading the membership to every state. We passed one million books swapped, then two, then five...now we're past seventeen million swapped and going strong. The site has changed enormously too...we've had a few makeovers and added a ton of features.

And all along, our members have never ceased to surprise us. Their suggestions have prompted new features; their enthusiasm has taken the club into wonderful places, creating book clubs that meet in real life, making games (and friends) out of exchanging books, even organizing two PaperBackSwap Cruises. They've made deep friendships and seen each other through major life events. Through it all, they've shared books - books for college, books for homeschooling, books for Book Clubs, books for vacation reading, books to read and repost for others to enjoy...with every swap, every book has found a new reader and a new life, fulfilling that vision we had more than a decade ago now, and making us very proud.

We may have created PaperBackSwap, but our members are its soul. Whether you joined years ago or only yesterday, you're part of something big.

Happy birthday to all of us!

Richard and
The PaperBackSwap Team

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Alice (ASJ)

Alice has been a member of PaperBackSwap for six and a half years, and she's really had an impact here! She's sent out a really amazing number of books, and has a superb swapping record. She's super active in Games, hosting almost 100 games and encouraging other members to host their own games.

"She consistently hosts well run and popular games in the forums. She also makes herself available to other hostesses to lend a hand if needed. Recently she encouraged at least two new hostesses to open games."

"Alice is very caring and compassionate towards PBS and a strong voice for the Site, and has donated not only her time, but in addition has donated many credits to PBS and the Schools program...Alice keeps reading both exciting and fun by hosting her many Games, starting and participating in many genre and book discussions, and starting and participating for multiple years in reading challenges; Alice is an Awesome PBSer!"

"I was new to Games, and a little shy. But Alice was so friendly--before long I felt really at home. I love the Games and I've made a lot of friends -- and I have Alice to thank!"

Alice, you are a real Ambassador for PaperBackSwap! You are Member of the Month for September. Congratulations!

If you have any nominations for Member of the Month, submit them to us hereYour nomination will not "expire"--anyone you nominate will have a chance at getting Member of the Month if enough nominations accumulate over time. Each month the person who has the most votes accumulated when the Newsletter goes to press gets to be Member of the Month and gets a newsletter mention and a nifty MoM icon to wear on profile and forum posts with pride.  So go for it! Tell us who's helped you in the Forums, who's been a great swapper, who in your opinion is a credit to PBS.  We are keeping a list of all the nominated members.  Who knows--one of them might be YOU!

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - Is there any way I can share my Bookshelf list with non-members? I'd like to link to it from my blog. -- Blogger in Boston

Dear Bossy,

Yes, you can do that - if you have your Privacy Controls set to allow your Bookshelf to be seen by non-members, you can share the link to your Public Bookshelf. The link to your Public Bookshelf is accessible from the top of your My Bookshelf page. Sharing that link will allow even non-members to see the posted books on your Bookshelf. You can access the Privacy Controls from the top of your Account >> Settings page. Any lists that you set to Public in your Privacy Controls can be shown off by sharing a link!

The Last Word:

  • Are you REALLY not reading the Blog? You don't want to miss out on Free Book Friday book giveaways, author interviews, awesome book reviews and giveaways, and so much more!
  • As always, don't forget to start your Amazon shopping from the link at the top of the PBS site - when you do this, a small percentage of your purchase amount comes to us.  So whenever (and whatever) you plan to purchase on Amazon, start from the Amazon link at the top of the PBS site. It's an easy, free way to support the club!
