Ascent Trip Report

To do this route a guide is required, although not needed. I decided to go to the entrance to the main route (located in the village of La Concepcion) by foot rather than by taxi or transfer. This section of road is very quiet, and I didn't manage to catch a ride (around 4km). At the entrance hut ($3 entry) the ranger told me I needed a guide (sign says so as well so no complaints). Fortunately a guide arrived a moment later, a nice young guy called Francisco. We negotiated a price of $15, which seems very reasonable considering I was alone (most hostels are quoting $25-40 solo). We began the walk at 6.45 and summited in 3 hours 20 minutes. The route is fairly clear, although we had dense fog the majority of the way. At 900m you reach the 'hut' and leave the plantations behind, and beware of strong winds. The hike is interesting, with different kinds of rocks, some of which are even quite hot die to the activity underneath. The summit was extremely windy, and unfortunately no views at all. Descent took about 2 hours 15 minutes. I had missed the infrequent bus back to Moyogalpa, so decided to walk the 4km back, and again, no chance of a hitch as all traffic were just completely full motorbikes! A lovely island, well worth a trip whether climbing the peak or not.
