Ascent Trip Report

Took chicken bus from Santa Cruz towards Altagracia, asked to be dropped at the trailhead (there are several trails, but we did it without a guide, so used the main route). The trailhead is about 3-4km before Altagracia - look out for the huge brown sign & a small dirt road. The tiny village here is known as "La Sabada".

The first 45minutes are only slightly uphill along a road, then a track, after which we came to a small registration station & very friendly old man. Paid the 50cordoba/US$2 entry fee & signed the book, was about 3hrs hike straight up from here. The track is easy to follow, the only place you might be unsure which way to go it is marked.

It is very steep, and don't expect to see much from the summit - we got a few brief glimpses of the lake, but no more. The crater is very cool though, as is the warm volcanic-heated ground at the rim & the giant rhubarb-like plants near the top.

The hike down takes almost as long & is also pretty difficult, due to its steepness & the rough path - you have to watch every footstep or you will fall or twist an ankle. Not the most enjoyable or rewarding hike I have ever done, but it is the tallest mountain in the world (on a island, in a lake)...
