Deaths mount as violence escalates in Gaza

Top of The World: Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes in Gaza, leveling apartment towers and other targets and a mounting death toll. And, with a surge in COVID-19 cases overwhelming the health system in India, officials reported a new record number of daily deaths at 4,205 people. Also, an independent panel reviewing the WHO’s response to the coronavirus outbreak said on Wednesday that the pandemic was preventable.

Top of The World: At least 24 Palestinians, including nine children, were killed overnight and 122 others were wounded in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in a new round of escalating tensions. And, the COVID-19 variant first identified in India has been designated a global concern by the World Health Organization. Also, the FDA has expanded the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 jab to children as young as 12.

India passes 200,000 COVID-19 deaths

Top of The World: India marked another bleak milestone on Wednesday after reporting more than 3,200 deaths from the coronavirus, pushing the country past 200,000 total deaths during the pandemic. And, protests turned deadly in Chad on Tuesday as thousands of people took to the streets demanding a return to civilian rule. Also, the US Justice Department has repealed certain grant funding restrictions for sanctuary cities.

Top of The World: US President Joe Biden announced Thursday a pledge to cut US greenhouse gas emissions in half before the end of the decade. And, Israeli military officials said a Syrian anti-aircraft missile landed deep inside the country near Israel’s secretive Dimona nuclear reactor. Also, India reported a grim record number of COVID-19 infections — over 314,000 in a single day.
