      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Passionate ideologues may find it compelling, but most filmgoers will find this low-budget adaptation of the Ayn Rand bestseller decidedly lacking.

America F Amazing film! The leftists will hate it! Too much truth Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/23 Full Review John R Apart from the bad direction and bad acting, this film makes me wonder why Ayn Rand was seen as an intellectual. The underlying arguments this story is trying to make could be ripped apart by the average 12 year old in about 15 minutes. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/23 Full Review Daniel W I've never seen a movie that is a more true to life depiction of human government, if left to government itself. Constantly trying to help people, but constantly hurting them instead. Power corrupts. But, I can also see why many people ideologically disagree with the conclusions drawn. However, I truly loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/23 Full Review Always L Fun to watch after reading the book eons ago. Casting of Dagney and Hank was great. Enjoyed the movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/23 Full Review Donald S The story the Left loves to hate. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/23 Full Review Russ G First off, I'm open to Miss Rand's general take on social philosophy, so I'm not badmouthing the movie on ideological grounds. The plain truth is that it sucks infected donkey balls. Bad script, bad direction, bad casting, and bad acting. The only GOOD news is that in the "trilogy" of films made to serialize the book, THIS PoS is as good as it gets. So, don't waste time on this because it goes from so-so here to bad in Part 2 to just plain laughable in the finale. I'd give this two stars instead of one but I want to steer you clear of the whole steamin' pile. If you dive in, don't say I didn't tell you so. Liam Lacey Globe and Mail Made on the cheap with no-name stars, this is no better than a stilted anachronistic curiosity, a low-rent version of the eighties' prime-time soap Dallas, with the industrial concerns and sexual mores of 1950s, all, somehow, set in 2016. Rated: 1/4 Oct 28, 2011 Full Review Linda Barnard Toronto Star A talky bore that spends too much time in wood-panelled offices and at chatter-heavy parties that were clearly shot on the cheap. Rated: 0.5/4 Oct 28, 2011 Full Review Carina Chocano New York Times Atlas Shrugged: Part I is in many ways charmingly oblivious to its inherent contradictions and the fact that its capitalist titans appear to be squatting in old, abandoned Dynasty sets, eating food-court baked potatoes. Rated: 1/5 Apr 28, 2011 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Atlas Shrugged is an easily set aside motion picture. Rated: 1.0/4.0 Sep 2, 2020 Full Review Megan Basham WORLD The very nature of Atlas Shrugged -- turning on its head all the typical clichés of who's a hero and who's a villain and its refreshing honesty about the way Washington works-gives it a certain liberating energy. Jan 8, 2019 Full Review Kelly Jane Torrance Washington Examiner While they've produced a competently made film, they haven't pulled off a miracle. Atlas Shrugged is much as you'd expect.
