      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Jack Nicholson embodies Hoffa with malevolent relish, but a dearth of meaningful insight knocks this crime epic off the mark by a nose.

Audience Member The greatest 02 hours: and 20 minutes ever of a true story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review delysid d suprisingly good movie Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/22 Full Review Audience Member Only Jack Nicholson saved this blasphemy of a film. Danny DeVito just doesn't fit the bill as a gangster and a playboy banging 2 women. Imagine you get threaten by a midget, half your size. Also, most of the screentime went to DeVito as a lamest bodyguard ever. Jack Nicholson's performance is so good that he felt like he doesn't belong in this pile of shit. Such a great character and actor wasted on Danny DeVito's fantasy on being cool bodyguard with 2 girlfriends. Good thing Martin Scorsese made The Irishman in 2019, otherwise Jimmy Hoffa's name will be stuck to this horrible crap forever. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member The strongest man in the U.S. for a while. Good docu-biopic of Hoffa Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review antonis k Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito are very good in their respective roles, unfortunately the long running time and some problems within it's script make for a joyless film. (5.5/10) Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An amazing film with Danny Devito having a terrific direction and performance, Jack Nicholson nailing such great acting as Jimmy Hoffa, and running in a pretty good pace. David Ansen Newsweek Big and portentous, Hoffa feels like a series of acting exercises inflated to epic proportions. But as a portrait of unionism's most controversial figure, it offers only flickering illumination. Aug 14, 2018 Full Review Adam Mars-Jones Independent (UK) Hoffa, with its jaundiced script and a director wedded to his rose-tinted spectacles, is a mess, with only the sterling truculence of Nicholson's performance to mitigate it. Nov 14, 2017 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Rated: D Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine With Jack Nicholson as the star and playwright David Mamet writing the script, Hoffa sounds unbeatable. But the movie is a major disappointment. Oct 15, 2019 Full Review Murray Kempton The New York Review of Books Danny De Vito's Hoffa is artfully constructed, masterfully played, and travels at speeds beyond the prescriptive norm. Aug 14, 2018 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com DeVito is blasting away with the audacity of a film student, making Hoffa an effort of extraordinary detail, craftsmanship, and directorial ingenuity.
