The regional television station of Mexico’s largest television network, Televisa, opened a 700-square-foot studio in San Diego’s Seaport Village on Thursday.

The cross-border studio was possible through a partnership between Televisa Californias — which includes, XEWT-Channel 12 — and Seaport Village. It is located in a former art gallery and is equipped with interview, greenscreen and nautical-themed sets.

“Televisa has always understood the Tijuana-San Diego region as a community,” said Julian Ceñal, director of Televisa Californias, during last week’s opening.

“The Hispanic audience we served 30 years ago has changed, and today the community’s need in this area implies more proximity, different content, and the possibility of being closer to our studios,” he added.

A spokesperson with Seaport Village said the arrangement is “open-ended and could evolve into a lease.”

Spanish-speaking Televisa’s XEWT-Channel 12 has operated in the Cali-Baja region for more than 60 years from its Tijuana headquarters. This will be the network’s first studio to operate and broadcast from across the border in San Diego.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said the collaboration illustrates the so-called mega-region, which he said “is more than two cities, it’s really one family, una familia.”

“This is unique for San Diego. It is unique for Tijuana. It is unique to our experience here. That is a story that I think is worth telling, and I’m grateful that Televisa will be right here in downtown San Diego to tell that story at this new studio”.

The studio will be used to shoot segments for the morning show Qué Buen Día, as well as for interviews and live reports covering San Diego, said Patricia Álvarez de los Cobos, CEO of Energy Communications, the exclusive representative for Televisa Californias.

Port Commissioner Rafael Castellanos praised the opening of the broadcast studio, which he considered an important part of the Seaport Village revitalization project.

Televisa Californias is planning to have “open hours,” giving viewers a first-hand glimpse into the production space, alongside an exhibit showcasing memorabilia from Televisa’s archives, the company said in a news release.

The studio will also display a rotating collection of work from artists from both sides of the border, offering them a chance for on-air mentions.

Televisa is considered the largest producer of Spanish-language television programs in the world.
