SIPRI’s work in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) aims to provide in-depth analyses of the political, social, economic and environmental drivers of conflict and pathways to peace in the region with the purpose of informing actors involved in peacebuilding efforts.
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Programme aims to provide in-depth analyses of the political, social, economic and environmental drivers of conflict and pathways to peace in the region with the purpose of informing actors involved in peacebuilding efforts. The programme conducts research at different levels, taking a holistic view of peacebuilding in which, the levels are intricately connected and mutually influence each other. Research ranges from in-depth local and community-level analyses to investigations at the country and regional levels. SIPRI’s work on MENA adopts a human security approach, focusing on the impact of conflict and various forms of insecurity on local populations. Research projects within the programme use an intersectional lens to highlight the variety of experiences and perceptions of different segments of society.
RESEARCH INITIATIVES
This initiative aims to understand the dynamics of peace and conflict at the local level by focusing on people’s relationships, attitudes and interactions in the everyday.
SIPRI aims to understand the nature and the evolution of state–society relations in MENA.
SIPRI analyses the challenges facing MENA as a whole, in relation to issues such as conflict, climate change, energy, food security, migration, economy and security.
