Civility Month 2020 Poster Contest
by Michelle C October 1, 2020
“Choose Civility: Be Respectful, Listen and Be Kind” was the theme of Civility First’s third annual art contest, held virtually this year due to the novel coronavirus. The organization invited electronic art submissions that reflected this theme from three age categories: children, youth, and adults. Publicized in Island County, the contest received entries from Island, Snohomish, and King counties, and one entry from Los Alamos, NM. As artists created their work, it was an opportunity for many households to explore what civility means to them.
Pacific NorthWest Art School officials judged the entries, recognizing a winner, runner-up, and honorable mention for each of the three categories. Artists brought imagination and creativity to their efforts, and all art pieces helped expand understanding and insights about what it means to be respectful and kind to others. Civility First hopes that viewers of the art will see each work as an invitation to a conversation about new ways to practice civility.
The Art Contest is a centerpiece of an annual month-long focus on civility. For the past three years October has been proclaimed Civility Month in Island County. Coronavirus or no coronavirus, this year is no exception. In addition to the art contest entries, Civility First is offering a slate of virtual workshops and panel discussions. The full schedule of events and the gallery of art entries is available on the Civility First website.

Creativity, adaptability, and a commitment to caring for others, this year’s art contest entries shine a light in the face of challenges. Congratulations to all who participated.
