SSP New Directions Virtual Seminar
How to Move Fast and Not Break Things: Balancing High-Speed Outputs at the Risk of Slamming on the Brakes

Wednesday October 6, 2021 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM EDT
Thursday, October 7, 2021 9:30 AM – 1:45 PM EDT

Over two days, SSP’s 2021 New Directions Seminar will take a deep dive into the breakneck speed in which our industry is currently transitioning, transforming, and evolving, while also recognizing and highlighting the limits (and uncomfortable consequences) of moving too quickly.  Seminar organizer Sophie Reisz, vice president at Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., Publishers, has put together a program with topics including:

  • A Whole New Word: Scholarship Under Fire
  • Preprints and New Content
  • New Directions in Open Access
  • Impact Factor Updates
  • Funds, Funders, Funding
  • New Directions in Tools for Discoverability, Findability, Shareability, and Impact
  • Plus time for networking!

Explore full conference details, including moderator and speaker information.

Sophie was kind enough to share some thoughts about what she is looking forward to. We shared Part 1 of our conversation a few days ago; Part Two is below.

Is there a particular topic you’re looking forward to seeing discussed?

Can I choose them all? 🙂 The beauty of the seminar is there is a panel discussion fit for every interest and corner of the academic publishing community, from publishers, funders, librarians, authors, peer review specialists, new technology companies, and more. I look forward to attending each and every session.

What do the selected speakers bring to the discussion?

Our incredible speakers bring a wealth of knowledge in every aspect of academic publishing and emerging movements and technologies in the industry. Every panel discussion was assembled with diversity, equity, and inclusion as a cornerstone of each and every discussion and we are tremendously proud and excited to highlight and promote our wonderful speakers.

What can attendees expect, particularly in the virtual format?  Why might someone suffering from “Zoom fatigue” sign up for a two-day online event?

We all know the trials and tribulations of navigating “Zoom fatigue” and so we have taken every aspect of that into account when planning our virtual meeting. Firstly, our meeting program is set up to allow for breaks and personal time for attendees between sessions. We also have a long break between morning sessions and evening sessions. To add to that, our lively panel discussions are expected to be both entertaining, lively, interactive, and informative, so attendees should (hopefully!) feel excited and energized after the sessions. We also have a social event after the sessions taking place on Day 2 and we hope you will join us!
