Emmanuel Macron 'wins battle of the alphas' in handshake with Donald Trump

Emmanuel Macron had a hard time letting go of Donald Trump when they shook hands during their first face-to-face meeting on Thursday.

The French president, in a dark suit and blue tie, gripped Donald's right hand so firmly that their knuckles turned white.

Images have emerged from the photo session at the US ambassador's residence in Brussels which show Trump finally giving up, his fingers loosened while Macron is still holding on tightly.

Philip Rucker of the Washington Post said: “Trump tried twice to release and Macron held on tight… It was quite a handshake, two alphas.”

Meanwhile Twitter users were quick to declare Macron, who at 39 is France’s youngest leader, the victor.

The awkward exchange came after Donald Trump appeared to refuse to shake German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s hand during an awkward joint appearance at the White House in March.

After their meeting, Trump and Macron had veal filet and Belgian chocolate mousse for lunch.
