Health

In Winter/Spring 2017, a team of educators engaged in prioritizing the Health Standards. The following year, the Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) Department issued a Request For Proposal (RFP) to invite vendors to submit proposals for K-12 Health Instructional Materials. The top vendor materials were piloted by educators in the Fall 2018. After a thorough evaluation of the materials, it was determined that no viable options were provided from vendors for grades K-8, but one vendor was selected for grades 9-12. A recommendation to adopt McGraw Hill Education for grades 9-12 was made to the Superintendent in January 2019. Since McGraw Hill was the existing vendor for Health education, prior to issuing the RFP, formal approval from the Board of Directors was not required.

In partnership with the WA Department of Health, OSPI conducted their own review and score of instructional materials for Sexual Health education. The Curriculum & Instruction Department used OSPI scores as a starting place to identify top vendors to present to the District Curriculum Development Committee (DCDC). The C&I department went a step further and invited leaders from local community organizations, family liaisons, and Tacoma families to review and provide feedback for each curriculum scored by OSPI. A recommendation to adopt Family Life And Sexual Health (FLASH) for grades 5-12 was made to the Superintendent and adopted by the Board of Directors in January 2019.
