Harry Kane's next club - where would Tottenham talisman fit in best?

Both Manchester clubs, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain could tempt the England captain but each face their own obstacles

Harry Kane's next club - where would Tottenham talisman fit in best?

If Harry Kane is able to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, where will he go? Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are all interested in the 27-year-old, while Paris Saint-Germain will also be monitoring the situation in the coming weeks.

It represents the biggest decision of Kane’s career and any move would surely be one of the most significant in the history of the Premier League.

Here, Telegraph Sport looks at the different appeals of the four interested clubs, analysing where Kane would fit in most naturally and what he could offer any potential new team.

Manchester City

The timing certainly suits Pep Guardiola’s side, who are saying farewell to Sergio Agüero at the end of this season. Telegraph Sport reported earlier this month that Kane is a player Guardiola would like to add to his attack and there is no doubt that the 27-year-old would fit into City’s system. City usually target younger players but Guardiola is not thought to have been put off by Kane’s age.

This season Kane has demonstrated his ability as a play-maker as well as a goalscorer, contributing 15 assists in all competitions. It does not require a huge leap of imagination to picture him producing even better numbers at the Etihad, where he would be surrounded by a fleet of rapid attackers. He could operate as a traditional centre-forward under Guardiola or in a more withdrawn role, or do both within the same game.

A move to City would all but guarantee a trophy of some sort for Kane, given the club’s recent record. The Englishman has made no secret of his desire to win titles and City look certain to continue pushing for honours under Guardiola’s management.

The challenge for City will be finding a way to finance the deal. In April, Guardiola put a possible move for Erling Haaland in doubt by insisting that they would not break the domestic transfer record for a striker. “All the clubs struggle financially and we are not an exception,” said Guardiola.

Manchester United

There is not such an obvious vacancy in the squad at Old Trafford, where Edinson Cavani last week signed a contract extension that keeps him at the club until June 2022. United also have young Mason Greenwood, who is finishing the season in superb form.

Cavani is clearly not a long-term solution, though, and it would not be fair to suddenly build the entire attack around Greenwood. Kane represents a high-class attacking option who would instantly move Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to a new level.

Kane has a strong relationship with both Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford, two England team-mates. There is also the obvious appeal of helping to re-establish United as the country’s leading footballing force and becoming the face of one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Is a new striker the priority for United this summer? Jadon Sancho is a long-term target and they have also been linked with defensive midfielders. Tottenham Hotspur will demand a huge fee for Kane and any move for the striker would no doubt put an enormous hole in the club's transfer budget. Would Kane be worth it for a club with more pressing issues to address within their squad?

Chelsea

The rivalry between Tottenham and Chelsea makes it hard to see any agreement being reached between the two sides. But Chelsea certainly have the spending power to compete with other potential suitors, and their impressive form under Thomas Tuchel would make them an attractive option for any player.

As reported by Telegraph Sport last month, Chelsea are planning a striker reshuffle this season. They will listen to offers in the region of £40 million for Tammy Abraham, while Olivier Giroud is also expected to leave at the end of the campaign.

Haaland and Romelu Lukaku are thought to be among the club’s top targets, but Kane would be the sort of player who could get the most out of existing players such as Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

Kane is a more creative option than Haaland and Lukaku, who prefer to run in behind, and one can imagine him forming a connection with Werner that is similar to his relationship with Son Heung-min in north London.

Financially, Chelsea could generate around £100m through sales this summer, with the likes of Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma all potentially leaving the club. These departures would also create space on the wage bill for a big earner like Kane.

Paris Saint-Germain

PSG will be monitoring the situation and their interest in Kane pre-dates the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, the former Tottenham manager who did so much to get the best out of the striker.

The French side’s priority is to extend the contract of Kylian Mbappé but, with Daniel Levy resistant to the idea of selling Kane to another English club, they might see an opportunity in the coming weeks. Whether Kane would be willing to go abroad, however, is another question entirely.

Perhaps Kane’s close relationship with Pochettino could become crucial as the saga unfolds over the coming weeks. A move abroad would also be Kane’s best chance of preserving his standing with the Tottenham fans, many of whom will react furiously if he moved to a club such as Chelsea, for example.

PSG’s interest in pursuing a new striker will be heightened if they sell Mauro Icardi, who has been linked with a return to Italy. It hardly needs saying that PSG have the financial firepower to make themselves heard in the scramble for Kane’s signature.
