Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Wales, 50, a former financier, co-founded Wikipedia, the free online encyclopaedia that is the world’s fifth most popular website. Listed by Time in 2006 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, he takes no salary from the website, founded in 2001. He lives in west London with his third wife, Kate Garvey, a former aide to Tony Blair, and daughters Ada, 5, and Jemima, 3. Kira, 16, his daughter with his second wife, lives in Florida.
