MPs expected to quiz Barclays chief over links to billionaire sex offender

The new chief executive of Barclays could face questions from MPs over allegations that Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender and former friend of the Duke of York, lobbied for him to get the bank’s top job.

Jes Staley, a Wall Street veteran, was named last week as the bank’s next chief executive. Members of the Treasury select committee have said they would seek a hearing with Mr Staley.

As well as posing questions on his plans for the bank, the MPs are understood to be interested in allegations that Mr Epstein lobbied on behalf of Mr Staley in 2012, when Barclays opted for Antony Jenkins over Mr Staley.
