When the pandemic forced events management students at Robert Gordon University (RGU) to run planned live festival events online, they not only showcased their creativity and enterprise skills but also raised money for charities in the city.

This combination of commercial nous and civic spirit is typical of the culture nurtured at this modern university in Aberdeen, which has a longstanding reputation for the calibre of its professionally-focused degrees and its sought-after graduates.

“What I think it re-emphasised was the sense of business engagement that is a massive strong point of this university, but also that sense of community,” says Professor Steve Olivier, who took charge as principal and vice-chancellor earlier this month following the retirement of Professor John Harper.

“One of the things that
