SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 25, 1908 (UP) - Capt. Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian navigator and scientist, who was the first man to succeed in getting through the Northwest Passage, and who two years ago redetermined the position of the north magnetic pole, which had been located by Sir James Clark Ross in 1831, is going back to the Arctic. He has already begun his preparations for the expedition, which will be undertaken by ship from the coast of Greenland.

NEW YORK, Sept. 10, 1909 (UP)The great polar controversy is now the unsupported word of one white man against that of another-a question of purely personal veracity between Cook and Peary.

NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 1909 (UP) - Polar scientists are commenting Wednesday on Commander Peary's refusal at Battle Harbor Tuesday to add any more details to his previous story or his controversy with Dr. Cook.

NEW YORK, Sept. 16, 1909 (UP) - The polar controversy may become three-cornered. Matthew Henson, Peary's negro companion on many arctic expeditions, contradicts Peary's statement that he was accompanied by only one man, an Eskimo, when he reached the pole. He says he himself, with four Eskimos, was in the party when the goal was attained.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2, 1909 (UP) - That Commander Robert E. Peary reached the north pole is the unanimous opinion of the subcommittee of the National Geographic society, appointed to investigate his claims.

LONDON, March 7, 1912 (UP) -- Satisfied of the authenticity of the reports received from Wellington, New Zealand, that Captain Roald Amundsen admits his British rival, Captain Scott, has won the honor of being the first individual to reach "Farthest South", Great Britain prepared to-day for a period of general rejoicing. Scott's wife and closest friends are anxiously awaiting word from the English explorer whose, present position is not yet known.

CHRISTIANA, Norway, March 7, 1912 (UP) -- In a special this evening the Newspaper Social Demokrater announces that it has received a private cable stating that Captain Roald Amundsen succeeded in his quest for the South Pole.

CHRISTIANA, Norway, March 8, 1912 (UP) -- To-day's meeting of Parliament was devoted to glorifying the success of Captain Amundsen in reaching the pole. It was decided to cable him congratulations and the fact that there was no hesitation in doing so was accepted as conclusive proof that the cablegrams received by the King, which have been withheld from the public in order not to prevent Amundsen selling the story of his achievement, tell of the successful trip to the pole.
