Title to Danish Indies

WASHINGTON -- Title to the Danish West Indies -- latest territorial acquisition of the United States, formally passed from Denmark today when Secretary of State Lansing and Danish Minister Brune exchanged the ratifications of the respective governments, completing the transfer.

The actual physical occupation of the islands, however, will not take place until the purchase price, $25,000,000 is paid Denmark.

The text of the treaty, which was subjected to bitter opposition in Denmark before finally being adopted, will be given out shortly, it was stated.

The new form of government, for the islands under United States sovereignty is now being discussed by Congressional leaders. Secretary Lansing has recently conferred with Senator Stone, chairman of the Foreign Relations committee, on this subject. Congress will have to make the final decision, the State Department said.
