SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- The state of Utah gallantly allowed the state of Nevada the honor of being the final state to ratify the 22nd amendment to the constitution.
In doing so, Utah passed up a chance to make history repeat itself.
Utah was the 26th state to ratify the repeal of prohibition in 1933. Monday, Utah speedend up legislative action and became the 35th state to ratify the 22nd amendment so Nevada could be last.
Ratification by three-fourths of the states made the 22nd amendment part of the constitution.
The resolution to ratify had passed the Utah house of representatives 28 to 22. The senate, notified Utah that the state of Nevada was waiting on Utah to act.
With the telephone call, the Utah senate suspended the rules and brought the resolution out of committee. The upper house then passed the resolution, 14 to 8, just before adjourning.
The Nevada senate waited anxiously for more than three hours for notification of Utah's action. When informed by the United Press that the Utah senate had acted, the Nevada senate immediately went into session and approved the ratification by a vote of 16 to 1.
