CHICAGO -- Thirteen months ago police and antiwar demonstrators clashed on the streets of Chicago during the Democratic National Convention.
Eight persons were indicted for conspiring to incite riots during the convention. They went on trial Wednesday.
And Wednesday police and antiwar demonstrators clashed again on the streets of Chicago.
Ten policemen, two assistant city corporation counsels and an unknown number of demonstrators were injured as militant blacks and whites marched Wednesday, the opening day of the trial of the eight radical leaders who call themselves "The Conspiracy."
While police fought the. marchers -- there didn't seem to be a flower child among them, in contrast to the Democratic convention -- outside and near the federal building, the trial opened before U.S. District Court Judge Julius J. Hoffman.
On trial are Black Panther Party leader Bobby Scale; Yippies Abbot "Abbie" Hoffman and Jerry Rubin; anti- Vietnam war figures David Dellinger and Renard "Rennie" Davis; Thomas Hayden, founder of Students for a Democratic Society; and university professors Lee Weiner and John Froines.
They each face possible 10- year jail sentences and $20,000 fines if they are found guilty of conspiring to incite riots during the August, 1968, convention.
