LONDON -- Jimi Hendrix, the American Negro-lndian many critics considered the world's finest electric guitarist, was taken today to St. Mary Abbot's Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, a hospital spokesman said. He was 25.

Hendrix recording hits included "Are You Experienced", "Axis: Bold and Love", "Electric Ladyland", "Band of Gypsies" with Buddy Miles, and "Jimi Hendrix Experience and Otis Redding Live in Monterrey", a current bestseller. Redding died in a plane crash two years ago.

Hendrix had been in Europe on a tour with his band and was visiting London. He had been staying at the Cumberland Hotel, but a hotel spokesman said Hendrix did not stay there Thursday night.

A close friend, British rhythm and blues singer Eric Burdon, said Hendrix spent the night at his girl friend's place.

"She found him in a coma this morning and called for an ambulance, but he died on his way to the hospital. All I know is that he had taken some sleeping tablets."
