Justin Bieber's 'Friends' is his best song in ages

Justin Bieber is in good company on Friends, the new single he shared with fans on Thursday.

The track reunites Bieber with producer BloodPop and songwriters Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, the team that engineered his single Sorry (along with Skrillex) from his 2015 album Purpose. 

Bieber is having a red-hot summer, largely thanks to his feature on Despacito, as Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's track tops the Hot 100 for a 14th straight week. After reaching No. 1 as part of DJ Khaled's I'm The One, Bieber scored another hit with David Guetta's 2U, one of the many collaborations he's churned out since releasing Purpose, teaming up with Major Lazer and MØ on Cold Water and DJ Snake with Let Me Love You.

Thankfully for fans, Friends finally jailbreaks Bieber from the soulless trop-house prison of his other EDM one-offs. Before he was BloodPop, Mike Tucker was a Vancouver video game producer who made colorful dance-pop under the name Blood Diamonds, and he continues to be Bieber's lucky charm, giving the track a disco-ball sparkle that borrows the throbbing synths and in-my-feelings lyrics of Robyn's classic Dancing On My Own.

Listeners will have to wait to hear Friends live, as Bieber recently surprised fans by cancelling the remainder of his Purpose tour amid a rocky stretch that included the star getting banned from China and a car accident involving a paparazzo.

Bieber addressed the surprise cancellation in a lengthy Instagram post but remained vague about his reasons for cutting his tour short.

"I’ve learned the more you appreciate your calling, the more you want to protect your calling,” he wrote. “Me taking this time right now is me saying I want to be SUSTAINABLE ... I want my career to be sustainable, but I also want my mind, heart, and soul to be sustainable. So that I can be the man I want to be, the husband I eventually want to be, and the father I want to be.”
