Justice, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Peacebuilding
As part of our mandated responsibility to help prevent, mitigate and resolve violent conflict abroad, the U.S. Institute of Peace is joining the efforts being undertaken by civil society organizations, elected officials and governments across the world to address issues of justice, diversity, equity and inclusion in the field of peacebuilding.
USIP recognizes that peacebuilding as a practice is itself profoundly impacted by historical legacies of geopolitics, economic exclusion and other forms of identity-based discrimination, including race, caste, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and language.
The role and culture of peacebuilding institutions and practices require urgent analysis, examination, debate and critical discussion as first steps in transforming peacebuilding as a practice to ensure that it is genuinely inclusive.
With democratic values and global stability under increasing threat, and with other great powers advocating alternative norms, the U.S. role as a global force for peace depends on our commitment to and the reality of living the principles we champion.
The deeply disturbing and shocking levels of racist violence this past year, including the thousands of attacks on people because of their color, ethnicity and identity, compounded by generations of racism and racial injustice, are directly impacting the credibility and effectiveness of U.S. efforts to promote the principles of sustainable peace.
USIP is fully committed to a frank evaluation and reckoning within peacebuilding and we look forward to working collaboratively with partner organizations, experts and leaders from all walks of society to actively promote justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of conflict prevention, mitigation and resolution.
