Vox Media announces second annual Fellowship Program

With a new cohort in Fall 2021, the program brings emerging voices from underrepresented communities to Vox Media’s editorial networks and businesses, including Vox and New York Magazine

The Vox Media Fellowship Program, which has been significantly expanded this year, is a one-year, full-time program intended for people new to media, bringing emerging voices to a larger audience. The media industry needs more of the voices that were historically excluded from all parts of the industry to strengthen reporting, storytelling and businesses, and to serve diverse audiences with meaningful work. To apply, visit the Vox Media careers page. The 2021-2022 cohort will begin in October.

The fellowship provides extensive training and mentorship, intensive feedback from managers, sessions featuring leaders across Vox Media, and other professional development including a built-in network of Vox Media leadership and editorial talent. Fellows will work across editorial teams and lines of business including Vox, New York Magazine, Eater, The Verge, SB Nation, and Revenue.

“We want to help develop the next generation of journalists who can make our industry’s work stronger and richer, and are excited to bring back our fellowship program for a second year,” said Tom Giratikanon, who helps oversee the fellowship program.

“The Vox Media fellowship program is one of the only opportunities for aspiring journalists in different industries to break into the field,” said Jerusalem Demsas, who was a fellow for Vox and is now a policy reporter. “I was able to integrate as a member of the Vox team, develop relationships across the newsroom, and publish across a range of issues including housing policy, finance, and important research. I encourage people interested in media to apply.”

In the program’s first year, fellows were selected from over 2,000 applicants. Across Vox Media’s editorial networks, fellows published stories across beats ranging from housing policy to accessibility, including why it costs so much to build transit, how deaf people faced unique challenges during the pandemic, how elite athletes have struggled with the long-term effects of COVID, how ranked choice voting in New York City’s mayoral race could affect election night results, and how Johnson & Johnson became the most popular vaccine in town. They also traveled across the country to photograph the mayors of Oklahoma’s last all-Black towns, and became the in-house photographer for some of our most popular and long-standing series. In Revenue, fellows learned the ins and outs of running a media advertising business, working across Sales, Insights, Marketing and Client Success, developing social media content, writing a weekly marketing newsletter with an audience of thousands, and playing an active role in creative projects. Several in this inaugural cohort are joining Vox Media as full time employees in 2021.

This program is a part of Vox Media’s multi-year strategy to make both our company and the media and advertising industries more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. As part of this commitment, Vox Media also hosts programs including the Vox Media Writers Workshop and on-demand training program Brainery to inspire and connect the next generation of media leaders.
