Google's Pixel laptop is the Lamborghini of Chromebooks. It's packed with all the best specs and it's got an absolutely amazing display you've gotta see to believe. But the thing we're all talking about is the Konami Code.
At least one person on the Chromebook Pixel team is a big-time videogame nerd, and we love him (or her) for giving us an Easter egg that activates a cool light show. For the three or four of you reading who don't know, the code, tapped out with the Pixel's directional keys, is up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right, then B, then A. Tap in the code and the LED strip on the Pixel's lid blinks a wild pattern of red, green, blue, yellow, purple and white lights. Check out the animated GIF at the top of this post to see what we're talking about ... and if it means anything in Morse code or something, let us know.
We're not sure exactly who at Google thought this up or who built it into the Pixel -- Google, so far, isn't saying -- but whoever did it must be a fan of Contra or other Konami videogames. And they likely grew up in the '80s. Chris Kohler, our esteemed editor of Game|Life (who loved the Easter egg, btw) called the Konami code a "litmus test for kids who grow up playing videogames in the '80s."
If you've played Contra, Castlevania, or any of the early Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles videogames either at the arcade or on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, you've likely punched in this code to unlock a few cheats. The Pixel's light show is all fun. It serves no function outside of delighting the hell out of us. But it sure does do that well.
