The NBS plays an important role in the process of development by providing data to assist and encourage informed decision making, research and discussions within government and the community, by leading a high quality, objective and responsive National Statistical System. When we are able to understand and interpret this data correctly, our ability to identify key areas, which require change, and our proposals for change are likely to respond to the real needs of the Nigerian community. Statistics can also aid the decision making process by enabling us to establish numerical benchmarks and monitor and evaluate the progress of our policy or program. This is essential in ensuring that policies are meeting initial aims and identifying any areas which require improvement.
The growing demand for good reliable statistics by our government, the general public and the private sector is enormous. There is widespread concern, despite the massive progress recorded by NBS, over the state of official statistics in Nigeria and the challenges of coordination in the National Statistical System.. The Statistical Act, 2007, however, empowers the NBS to act as the coordinator of the National Statistical System and the main Agency responsible for the development and management of official statistics, and in that role, advise the Federal, State and Local governments on all matters relating to statistical development including standards and appropriate methodologies in the system. Despite all these challenges, NBS has continued to get better and better over time. We will continue to do all we can to ensure the delivery of good reliable and timely data.
